LEGO VIP Rewards: Tin Signs – For the completist who has everything else already [Review]

Back in November, we shared a review of the 1950’s LEGO Logo tin sign VIP reward. Since then, LEGO has introduced four more designs to help fill out your wall space – 5007155 Ninjago, 5007156 – City, 5007157 – Friends and 5007158 – Rebuild the World. Each is available one-per-VIP-account in the Rewards Center (US | CAN | UK). In the US they’re 1,200 points each with a listed retail value of $15. We caved and ordered all four – come along as we take a look at just what we got for our 4,800 points. (Spoiler alert: Not much.)

Unboxing. Unsleeving? Something.

Due to some unfortunate policy decisions/web design at LEGO.com, you can only redeem one VIP reward per order.  That means I had to order four times to get the full set of signs – a lot of wasted shipping, packaging, and warehouse labor.  LEGO is making efforts elsewhere to create less wasteful packaging – maybe someone will eventually clue in to the problems their VIP rewards program are adding to the mix.

Anyway.

Each sign comes in a color-coded paper sleeve with the theme’s logo front and center and a small “Tin Sign” label along the bottom edge. Each tin measures 12″x6″ (about 30.5  x 15.2 cm).

The backs of the packages are uniform, with the LEGO and VIP logos. You can see here that all four sleeves arrived with a decent amount of warp, wear, and tear to them. Never a fun way to start.

The tins themselves are protected with a thin sheet of tissue paper. This worked well, and none of the actual tins had any visible scratches when I removed them.

The Tins

The Ninjago tin features the five male ninjas, armed to the teeth and ready for battle. It’s irksome that Nya (the main female character) didn’t make the cut for inclusion here.

Here’s a minifigure to give you a sense of scale for the tin.

The Friends tin showcases the main characters from the theme, as well as the bright colors that are a signature for the line. The large square border behind the LEGO logo looks out of place to me, though, as it blends into the white background stripes to create some weird negative spacing.

The CITY sign focuses on the Stuntz subtheme from 2021. (The motorcycle here is from set 60296 Rocket Stunt Bike) Personally, I think there’s a lot more to the City theme than racing, but I guess you have to focus on something. It is an action-packed shot, at least.

Finally, we have the Rebuild the World theme. This is the most minimalistic of the signs, but still my favorite. I love the rocket-powered snail, and the meta-theme is great. Despite my reservations about these tins, I’d probably still pick this one up just because it’s cute.

On display

These tin signs aren’t particularly large, but adding these four to the previous Retro-logo offering can make for an interesting group display.

Like the VIP collectible coins, you have to wonder if LEGO is just throwing whatever collectibles they can come up with at the wall to see what sticks. Sadly, the lack of nail holes or other attachment points promises that these won’t be sticking any time soon. I hung these using flat-head thumbtacks, but they’re not firmly braced and wouldn’t survive any jostling. I’ll probably move them higher up on the wall to allow for that. (Or find a removable double-sided display tape or something.) Assuming I leave them up. Which is a coin-toss right now.

Conclusion and recommendation

So. Are these worth 1.200 VIP points each? Honestly, probably not. Unless you’re a super-fan of any of these themes you’d be better off just spending those points on a discount towards an actual LEGO set. They’re small, not particularly well illustrated, difficult to hang, and really not something the mainstream LEGO collector is going to need to add to their collection. On the other hand, that snail on the Rebuild the World tin is super cute. Unless you’re an uber-completionist, I’d save your points for whatever collectible or VIP promotion LEGO releases next.

LEGO VIP Tins are available now in the VIP Rewards Center (US | CAN | UK). Currently limited to one of each design per VIP account.

Depends on your passion for the theme I guess. If they ever make a Bionicle one I’ll buy it! :p
