LEGO Technic reveals new 42123 McLaren Senna GTR with 830 pieces [News]

The LEGO Group and McLaren Automotive continue their collaboration with yet another building set, 42123 McLaren Senna GTR. The new LEGO Technic model is an 830-piece replica of GTR modification of the world-famous hypercar in the blue and silver livery. The set will hit store shelves on January 1, 2021, with a price of US $49.99 | CAN $69.99 | UK £44.99 | EU €49.99 | AU $89.99.

Judging by the size of the model, the new 42123 McLaren Senna GTR is in the same category with 42109 App-Controlled Top Gear Rally Car . However, since the McLaren has no motors or smart hubs, functionally, it is similar to the last year’s best-seller 42093 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1.

One of the most striking features of the new model is its livery. It’s not every year that we see a new LEGO Technic model in blue, but in this case, the mix of blue and silver gives the model some solid bonus points. Although we expect the wheel arches to be printed, there seems to be a handful of blue panels decorated with stickers.

Among the functions of the model are a fake V-8 engine, opening doors, and functioning steering. The finished McLaren Senna GTR is 32 cm (12 inches) long.

LEGO Technic 42123 McLaren Senna GTR will be available starting January 1, 2021.

“Recreating a car that is so extreme to the core as the McLaren Senna GTR with LEGO Technic gave us an incredibly interesting challenge” says Uwe Wabra, Senior Designer, LEGO Technic. “This track car is not like any road car I’ve worked on before. It’s got some unique details, like its silhouettes and the awesome rear spoiler, which differentiates the building experience from others. Just like the incredible engineers at McLaren do when designing their supercars, we really pushed things to the max so the resulting model perfectly honours the art form that is the McLaren Senna GTR.”

Robert Melville, Design Director McLaren Automotive, comments: “The team responsible for the design of the McLaren Senna GTR worked incredibly closely with their design counterparts at the LEGO Group to capture the extreme looks, excitement and essence of such an incredible supercar for LEGO Technic builders. Just like the real thing, the LEGO model is packed full of incredible details from the rear spoiler to the moving pistons in the V8 engine to the dihedral doors meaning that we’re as proud of the model as we are of the real car.”

The LEGO Technic McLaren Senna GTR is the latest model to be released as part of the long-standing partnership with McLaren Automotive that started in 2015, following McLaren Senna LEGO® Speed Champions set launched in 2019. LEGO builders of all ages have so far been able to create such iconic supercars as the McLaren P1™, the 720S in 2017 and the McLaren Senna in 2019.The two brands are united by a drive for engineering excellence, pioneering design that makes models like this so fun to build individually or as a family.

Is this set (and similar) ‘compatible’ with 42098? I always thought Lego would add more models that would ‘fit’ on 42098, with the lock/release etc., but I don’t know if these are actually compatible, somehow related to that set?

@FeikeEU this is a very good question! From what we see, the chassis is very similar to the other cars that fit 42098. The only thing we have to check is whether the new Mclaren is short enough. The new model is 30 cm long, and we have to test it yet.

I don’t want to be too much of a complainer, but I wish the Technic line would dial back on the panels. They’re trying too hard to model the surfaces and rather than make it look good it just looks clunky and awkward, especially when contrasted to the Creator large vehicles.

IMO they should go back to a more “structural” look with fewer panels, more exposed mechanicals, and use the part count to include more technic features. Yes, use a few flex rods and a wheel arch here or there to give the general impression of the car, but if you’re trying to really accurately represent the real thing just admit that it needs to use more system bricks to accomplish that.

I like this, but if that’s a print on the front fender, then leaving the stickers off is probably not a great option.
