DOH-ceptively spacious

Although the LEGO Simpsons House makes a great display model, César Soares was unwilling to fork out the small fortune needed to own one. So instead he debigulated the design to create his own microscale version – complete with working garage door, pink car, and yard furniture. WOO-HOO!

Mmmm... Leavened flour paste deep fried in rendered pig fat

You’d have a hard time figuring out what iconic Simpsons locations were not included in the spectacular Springfield layout that Matt De Lanoy unveiled at Brickworld last year. But I guess Matt found a pretty significant one in the form of Homer’s gastronomic Mecca, the Lard Lad donut shop. Fortunately, he has now corrected this glaring oversight:

May you always make your saving throw

Dungeons and Dragons, the grand-pappy of role playing games, has endured decades of poor imitations, ill-conceived spin-off products, and even the arrival of the digital age. Yet today it remains a permanent fixture of popular culture, and the new 5th edition rules look to be the best version yet. Love him or hate him, most D&D fans will recognize Dungeon Master (aka “Red Yoda”) from the short-lived Dungeons and Dragons TV show, recreated here in all his super-patronizing glory by Chris van Vliet.

After dragging a bunch of kids into the D&D universe to do his dirty work, and providing cryptic clues in order to avoid being legally implicated, it turned out in the end that Dungeon Master could have returned them to Earth at any time. More like “puppet master”. What a git!

It’s the wrong sheep, Gromit!

Fans of the Wallace and Gromit franchise will no doubt be familiar with Shaun the Sheep, the spin-off that spawned a spin-off and even a movie. Well now Palixa And The Bricks have recreated the show’s characters in LEGO – with great use of Bramsphere techniques to make the sheep suitably wooly.

The build of the century

Unless you happen to live here in Seattle, where we had a major cable TV outage last night – or you just happen to have something useful to do with your time, money and brain cells – then you might have watched last night’s stunt (sorry, “sporting event”) where two overpaid thugs (sorry, “athletes”) danced around the ring with no more incentive than who would go home with 60% rather than 40% of a staggering 9-digit prize pot. And now this truly historic event has been suitably ridiculed (sorry, “immortalized”) in LEGO by Swedish character building duo SuckMyBrick!

Spoiler alert: All your favorite characters will probably die

With just minutes before the Game of Thrones season 5 premiere airs here on the West coast, I couldn’t resist sharing yet another new GoT creation. This time it’s from Polish builder crises_crs – reminding you all to visit your ‘throne’ before settling down to see whether your favorite characters will meet sticky ends before the end of the opening episode. And make sure to have your popcorn, hot cocoa, and George RR Martin voodoo doll on hand before the action unfolds…

Get that giant pie in the oven: Game of Thrones is back tonight!

To mark the arrival of Game of Thrones’ 5th season, the Tywin of the LEGO world Guy Himber built this tribute to the show’s humblest and most loveabe scallwag, King Joffrey. Long may he reign!

“Using his beta capsule, Hayata becomes Ultraman!”

From the same people that brought Godzilla to our screens over half a century ago, came the Saturday morning kaiju punch-fest Ultraman (ウルトラマン). A staple of Japanese television, this show seems to have experienced regular revivals and adaptations since the first series aired in 1966.

Flickr member umamen has built this perfect recreation of the Ultraman’s long standing, size-changing nemesis Alien Baltan. How a species with crab claws instead of opposable thumbs would ever get past the invention of the wheel is left as an exercise for the reader. But then again, who said this show had to actually make sense!?

Behold the gaseous stench of Skeletor’s breakfast burrito!

…apologies, but Skeletor’s revival on Robot Chicken is so complete at this point that I can’t even remember his catchphrase from the original Masters of the Universe show any more. But I do remember that he had an evil arch-nemesis called He-Man. And now Kevin Ryhal has crafted these erstwhile Eternial enemies in LEGO, resulting in what look like perfect replacements for my long-lost MOTU action figures:

Thank you, come again – LEGO announces 71016 The Kwik-E-Mart

As a child of the ’90s, The Simpsons was my favorite show, and naturally Lego was my favorite toy. My reaction to the combination of the two was ambivalence; as much as I still love Lego and hold nostalgia for the golden years of The Simpsons, their merging still feels somewhat unnatural, a feeling continuously reinforced by the uncanny valley nature of the bulbous cartoon heads on classic minifig bodies.

All that said, I’m excited for this set. I don’t believe Lego has ever tackled the inside of a convenience store before, and the set is chock full of nicely designed accessories and a plethora of printed and stickered details. But enough of my reaction based on a set of photos, here’s the press release;

Up and downy stuff in a big blue box

The only way a show like Doctor Who can achieve the longevity it has, is through change: the Doctor changes, his companions change, and even his temperamental TARDIS changes. And that is reflected perfectly in the many Who-themed LEGO creations of Thorsten Bonsch (Xenomurphy).

Thorsten’s project to commemorate the show’s 50th anniversary using LEGO was so ambitious that it’s still a work in progress two years later. And now he has completed the pièce de résistance: the 11th Doctor’s TARDIS! Behold…

I always assumed his recreation of the 9th Doctor’s TARDIS would remain the definitive LEGO version of the TARDIS interior, but this one is just spectacular! Good luck finding any right angles in this build…

Of course, we cannot expect in our wildest dreams that the recently announced LEGO Ideas Doctor Who project will be anything like this. But if anyone from LEGO Ideas is reading this, I beg you to study Thorsten’s minifig scaled Dalek. You know, before you design something we’ll all hate ;-)
