Fritz Lang’s silent sci-fi masterpiece Metropolis remains one of cinema’s most iconic films nearly 100 years after it first hit screens. Paolo Loro‘s LEGO tribute to the film’s classic poster should be instantly recognizable to cinephiles. A black brick skyline and shafts of golden Ninjago blade “light” capture the dramatic angles of Lang’s German Expressionist vision. C-3PO stands in for the Maschinenmensch, appropriate as the film’s robot inspired our favorite protocol droid’s design 50 years later.

Taking a cautious dive into a miniature ocean
Time to explore the watery depths! Paolo Loro takes us for a swim with this superb microscale build. Fitting in nicely with the aquatic theme is a minifigure air tank which forms part of the yellow submarine. The clear angled handles not only do a great job at holding the submarine in place but they also portray a stream of bubbles, trailing behind the vehicle as it descends. However, the submarine needs to be wary of deep sea mines represented by chain flail pieces. These explosives are nestled in with a thick abundance of sea vegetation featuring an assortment of spiked vine pieces and 1×1 flower pieces.
Non-toxic but still inedible
Deep in the forest, far from the beaten tracks, a colony of fungi fruits from the remains of an old tree. Builder Paulo Loro brought new life to some old table scrap mushrooms by integrating them into this natural display. Fungi can be difficult to identify so its hard to say if these are based on enoki, shiitake, or something else—I’m no mycologist. All I can say is there’s a certain magic to the twists and turns the mushrooms make. Tail pieces are used to represent the stalks of the fruiting bodies while dish pieces represent the different stages of caps. The most mature of the species use the rock elements with eggshells underneath as gills.
The girl with the golden curls
Paolo Loro has constructed this beautiful portrait which depicts a mysterious character named as “Lion Girl.” The most striking element of the model has to be the golden curls which have been carefully placed in order to create the girl’s wavy mane. The face has some interesting features, such as the smooth angles and the use of a claw piece to create the eye. The model not only looks fantastic but also has a sense of intrigue within its portrayal, as the features of the character are not fully defined.
