We’ve seen frogs. We’ve seen turtles. We’ve seen all sorts of critters enhanced for battle with custom mech suits. But I have yet to see a snake–let alone a mech suit designed to do so much destruction. Because guns for legs is pretty awesome.

I can’t close this post, though, without pointing out her brilliant Dolphin Mech Suit, which looks like it’s a few gears away from being a steampunk Dolphin Mech Suit. Now THAT I want to see!
I grew up reading the Redwall series, and despite the fact that the books didn’t vary much in plot (usually something to do with defending the Abbey, or rescuing the youngsters from some nefarious evildoers) the books still hold a special, nostalgia-tinged place in my heart.
Stormbringer takes a break from his series of dragons to post this much fluffier model of Martin, the hero of the very first book of the series.
Paul T. goes old-school with this brick-built organic tank. The well-known Ankylosaurus may be an herbivore, but with armor plating and built in weapon in its tail, it’s spoiling for a fight. Paul’s clever creation incorporates the new inverted 2×2 dome brilliantly to comprise the armor plating. This is just the sort of awesome creation we want to see at our ChronCon display at Brickcon, where we even have a category for Fiercest Fighting Dinosaur!
In a city that never sleeps, only one superhero knows how to get things done. That superhero is Unibat! Or is it Battikitty? Well, whatever you call this adorable hybrid by Melanie F., it’s awesome. Built to the same scale as her other giant Unikitty versions (Seasick Unikitty is my favorite), Melanie’s Unikitty army is well poised for Unikitty dominance.

It floats before you, a bulbous body with a central, unblinking eye, and a large maw filled with daggerlike teeth. Smaller eyes, attached to wriggling stalks, sprout from the top of the orblike body.
Such is the Beholder, one of the most legendary and feared monsters from the annals of the Dungeons & Dragons Monster Manual. This incarnation, brought to us by Guy H. (V&A Steamworks), may look a bit cuter than Gary Gygax had in mind, but is no doubt just as deadly to your party.
There are many, many things that make me exceedingly happy about this creation. The color use. The stunning architecture. The lovely painting that inspired it. The full interior. The fact that Sebastiaan Arts (Aliencat) has posted something magnificent, after a lengthy hiatus.
Also, the fantastical creature doing terrible things on the first floor. That’s definitely a plus. Watch it in motion.
To complete this week’s brief exploration of unusual steampunk creations, let’s go wild …literally! First up, here’s a punked-out Kraken courtesy of Jonas (the guy that gave us the steampunk Batcave and Tumbler).
And to remind us there’s a lot more to steampunk LEGO than simply “using a lot of brown and gold”, who better than Mark Stafford with this overlooked steampunk dinosaur from 2012 (the year, not the movie).
Mushu is almost certainly my favorite Disney character, and this hilarious sculpture by Mike Nieves (Retinence) is perfect. I’m amazed that Mike was able to effectively pull off such a spindly creature while maintaining enough structural integrity for it stand.
Vlad Lisin ([Rhymes_Shelter]) once again wows us with an incredibly realistic Bionicle creation, this time depicting the characterful Rafiki from Lion King.
After Tyler posted an anti-frog build, A Plastic Infinity decided to show us Frogs are smarter than the average bot, with this amusing build:
While it was definitely the humour that caught my eye (not to mention the cute little frog), there are actually a lot of fantastic build techniques he’s used in the bot itself. From the brilliantly illegal shoulder joint connections, to the marvelous finger connection – this bot just fantastic.
Micah B.’s (Arkov) beastly villain is a fantastic creature. Titled the Mortal-Foe, it’s a great example of how good posing and careful parts usage can make a model come alive. There aren’t many more parts on display here than in the typical Bionicle/Hero-Factory set, and yet Micah’s fey being displays a great deal more personality and life (and death) than most official sets.
