Where cheese slopes come from

I love cheese. So it would seem does SlyOwl — Cheddar, Red Leicester and Edam in particular.

Titled “Cheddar Gorge,” check out the various interesting techniques SlyOwl used to show liquids in motion throughout his creation:

Noddy’s castle masterpiece

I’ve never known Karwik (aka Noddy) to build castles, but I guess I was utterly wrong. Check out the amazing Tower of Brothers with a beautiful interior reminiscent of some ancient ruins.

Castle Blondel by Gork

One restriction of the Colossal Castle Contest is that you’re limited to three pictures per entry. Many builders post a second folder of pictures to show off additional details and angles, but no such luck with Gork‘s entry, a castle called Blondel. Here’s hoping Gork will post a lot more later, because I certainly like what I see so far — especially the bridge and the wooden part of the structure.

Don’t miss all three of Gork’s CCCV entries.

Wizard amok

Tom Sneller‘s entry for the “Castle Spaces” category in this year’s Colossal Castle Contest flying furniture, beautiful stained glass, and some seriously scared guards.

Minifigs from Monty Python and the Holy Grail by Kyle Peterson

As “Armothe,” Kyle Peterson may be best known as one half of the team behind BrickForge, but he’s also a great minifig customizer in his own right. His latest set of figs is from Monty Python and the Holy Grail. From Arthur and Sir Bedevere (above) to Launcelot and Robin (below), the gang’s all here.

Check out Kyle’s Flickr photostream for more, including Galahad, Gawain, and my favorite, a French Knight:

“Now go away, or I shall taunt you a second time!”

I see naked minifigs

That’s right, Aaron (Darkspawn) created a scene of a majestic bathhouse, but the royal atmosphere was quickly contaminated by two naked knights crashing in on the princess’ “me” time.

Three by Me!

Hey y’all! Been busy lately (what else is new?) but I just got three more entries wrapped up for the Colossal Castle Contest.

Hikone Castle by Takeshi Itou

Takeshi Itou may not be the most prolific builder, but his creations are always worth the wait. His latest creation is Hikone Castle. Today, the castle is a National Treasure because it’s one of the rare castles from the feudal era that wasn’t torn down or destroyed and then rebuilt in modern times as a tourist attraction.

But enough about the real thing. What makes Takeshi’s version special is the technique he used for the base of the castle; the three-dimensional rock wall is amazing, built from bricks, slopes, and tiles. The scale of the castle seems pretty close to MINILAND (as compared to the smaller minifig scale Takeshi normally builds in), which has enabled Takeshi to use plates for the roof rather beautifully.

Read more about the real Hikone Castle on Wikipedia (in English) or the 400th anniversary site (in Japanese).

Feast of Fools

In preparation of go all out for the six categories of the CCCV contest on Classic Castle, Aaron (Darkspawn) reveals his fourth entry, Festus Fatuorum. According to the builder, “Festus Fatuorum (Feast of Fools) was a pre-runner to April Fool’s Day, celebrated during the Vernal Equinox it was mostly celebrated in France & the festival was supressed by the end of the 16th Century.”

Satan’s Playhouse

So this is where the satanists, demons, and cultists hang out… Chateau Satan! Once again, Rock (aka Rocko) amazes us with a masterfully crafted castle diorama, and how could I deny the added awesomeness of the demonic theme! Take a close look at all the details, gory or just plain funny, and perhaps even naughty. Can you find the bathing babe?

Must be the Kraken

Marcin (aka Hippotam) portrays the Last Journey of a doomed voyage.

There’s tons of details to examine in this action-packed scene. Above all, there’s tentacles from the depths! I could write a whole poem about it, but until later…

Deað bið sella eorla gehwylcum þonne edwitlif.

Aaron Andrews‘ depiction of Beowulf’s fateful final battle is chock full cool details, like snow on the mountaintop, a treasure chamber, and lovely mushrooms. Be sure to check out the full gallery on Brickshelf.

(Yes, that’s right, the post title is indeed in Old English. :-D It’s a quote from lines 2890-2891 that says “A warrior will sooner die than live a life of shame.”)
