Massive LEGO Cathedral of St. Francis of Assisi built from thousands of LEGO bricks

The Cathedral of St. Francis of Assisi looks impressive and a fine work of architecture that would be based on something a real landmark, but little would you guess that Tony Sava‘s amazing LEGO cathedral is actually fictional, based on St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City and Chartres Cathedral in France.

If one is not impressed enough, what you see on the outside walls simply scratches the surface of what’s inside. Tony designed and built a nave to fit a full congregation for a proper wedding ceremony or weekly mass.

Built intricately with stained-glass windows that are perfect for ambient lighting to flow through, it embraces the very same atmosphere of stepping into an embodiment of a holy sanctuary.

The cathedral is full of detailing that will make your eyes wander in awe, such as a piped organ to fill the halls with heavenly music.

A red-carpeted aisle and a pulpit and accessories like the floor candle holders add to the detailing.

Building with such details is not without its toil. From concept to completion took about 5 months with serious architectural and blueprint planning with layouts and dimensions.

The finished work and time spent is definitely an architectural piece to appreciate and be in awe of.

Lego my Chess

These are two sets that I made for Classic Castle’s Chess Challenge, which ends tonight. I had a lot of fun with these. I’ve never made two matching creations in different scales before.

I’m hooked on Chess sets now. I think I’m going to do some more…

All along the Clocktower...

There’s always something that totally draws me in with well-done scenes, and the latest creation from hippotam is no exception to this. His clock tower itself is just gorgeous, and the chaos at the base of the tower is just fantastic.

A Castle on the Cliff

Real life castles tend to make beautiful LEGO creations, and Neven Cintauer presents his version–gorgeous down to the last micro detail.

The real Predjama is located in Slovenia, and was constructed in the mouth of a cave. I find the inclusion of a secret tunnel particularly interesting.

Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair! | Rapunzel’s tower in LEGO

Jordan Schwartz (Sir Nadroj) built a very bright interpretation of Rapunzel’s tower. The technique of stacking concentric rings to create a conical tower is very clever, and the effect is one of a kind. The creation looks deceptively smaller than its actual size, which is actually 3 feet tall.

Take note of the color combo of the tiles at the base of the tower. It is a mix of tan, dark tan, and light yellow!

Mont St. Michel

Arthur Gugick is a genius, this is a well established fact. His latest creation, a recreation of Mont St. Michel, simply reinforces the idea.

As I prepared to move back to our regular programming, this gorgeous layout by Lugpol member Ciamosław Ciamek caught my eye. Built around a couple of expanded Medieval Market Village buildings, this layout has it all.

The Best of Nnenn: Weapons of a bygone era.

Naturally no one can argue that Nnenn is best known for his incredible fighters and starships. However, he did dabble in other genres as well. A friend reminded me today of this intricate set of medieval weapons.

The most recent Classic-Castle monthly challenge focuses on Chess (either sets or pieces)–and Aaron Dayman’s contribution is simply above and beyond. He’s crafted one side of the board as Forestmen!

Barracks from ancient Japan

Brickshelf user LakMause built a barracks from ancient Japan. The scaled golden roof is a gorgeous feature, but there are plenty of small details that you shouldn’t miss. Check out the pond, the training ring, and the building interior.

This would make an excellent contribution to our Big In Japan collaboration project for BrickCon 2010.

Even dwarves can stand tall

Tom Snellan presents a beautiful snowscape at the entrance of a dwarves’ mine. The most impressive feature is definitely the sculpture of the giant dwarf (pardon the oxymoron), which very closely resembles its minifig counterpart. I also like the combination of using droid arms and arch bricks on the tree, which adds a realism that either alone can achieve.
