Doctor Who: The Unearthly Child

Thorsten Bonsch (Xenomurphy) returns with the 4th installment of his 50 years of Doctor Who tribute that will culminate in November with a large model that will no doubt be mind-blowing. This time the subject is the legendary first episode of the beloved series entitled “The Unearthly Child“. Thorsten gives a key scene the black and white treatment and the results are stunning.

In a thinly veiled attempt to generate comments, I will also offer that I just don’t understand the appeal of Doctor Who. While I can appreciate the skill of Thorsten’s model and presentation, I really don’t think the British should be allowed to produce filmed science fiction. Maybe Dr. Who would be better with puppets…or minifigs? I shall wait patiently in the comments area to be shanked with a sonic screwdriver.

“Pimpin’ Ain’t Easy”

Feast your blood-shot eyes on the Best in Show award winner from Sydney Brick Show which is about to wrap up on the 28th. Titled “Home Sweet Groan“, this ramshackle gem shows a newly-wed zombie bride and groom enjoying their marital digs. The builder is Jade Wisniewski (Taz-Maniac) who, according to his Flickr profile, is a self-styled “LEGO Pimp”. I’m not sure what that means exactly, but I do know that Big Daddy Kane teaches us that “Pimpin’ Ain’t Easy” and there is nothing easy about this model.

Surely a Gratuitous Display...

Here is a little salacious action for your Friday night viewing pleasure courtesy of your dirty uncle Hugebricks. It is a special thrill to finally bring this exciting builder and his underappreciated work into the TBB family. I know this is an older model and we here at the blog like to give you only the freshest product available, but I think Muri is worth a little rule breaking.

It is just too bad that there is no remaining documentation of Soren’s infamous “Skank-bot” for a detailed comparison.

Friday Night Fights (Round 2)

Welcome back to The Colosseum at Caesars Palace in fabulous Las Vegas Nevada for another hard hitting edition of Friday Night Fights! Tonight’s match-up is a battle of TBB rookies looking to move of the ranks and make a name for themselves in the hotly contested middleweight division. Now for the tale of the tape:

Fighting out of the red corner…the pride of Shiga, Japan…Nathan “The Hammer” Penonzek (– NHI – Nathan’s heavy industry) and his mighty “NHI MHS-NFA3-03FT”

And fighting out of the blue corner…from the wrong side of the tracks…Miguel “Rocket” Reizinho (MReizinho) and his “LL-897 Rocket Launcher Redux“.

As usual, constant reader, you are tasked with deciding the outcome of this pugilistic endeavor. On the first episode of Friday Night Fights John Stephens (-=Steebles=-) won a crushing 3-0 victory over his much better known opponent. What will happen this week? Who will experience the thrill of victory, and the agony of defeat?

“Cappin Fools” – Captain America’s M3 Half-track

Project Azazel continues his all out assault on TBB in 2013 with the M3 “Cappin Fools” WW2 era half-track. The model is great, with all the detail you would expect from a builder of Mr. Project’s caliber, but the addition of America’s favorite eugenics experiment behind the .50 Cal really puts it over the top.

“We can drive it home, with one headlight.”

iomedes!… strikes again with his interpretation of Syd Mead’s “SENTINEL 400 limousine“. The model has everything a discerning passenger expects from a cutting edge motorcar including rich Corinthian leather, a bottle of Château Cheval Blanc 2038 in the back and fat stacks of cash in the boot.

Constant reader, I cannot stress enough that having an exclamation mark in your screen name really can increase your chance of weekend bloggage.

A new kind of water

Jonas (Legopard) returns to TBB with a new water technique that is sure to catch on with the hot weather crowd. In “Flooded Barrack“, the builder uses window “glass” supported by various plants and parts to simulate dihydrogen monoxide and the overall effect is very pleasing although no doubt a bit fragile in places. More than just a test bed for his new method, this model is also a nice study in how to build a structure that is abandoned or decayed. More photos are available on MOCpages.

Take me back to the shack!

Brick Vader brings us back down to earth with this subdued gem, simply titled “Mediteranes Haus“. I could ramble on at length about how great this model is…talk about techniques and tedious details, but the hour is getting late in Vegas and these broads want to dance. SF-36 Aethon

It seems like you can’t stop the sci-fi action today, you can only hope to contain it. Submitted for your approval, the “SF-36 Aethon” star-fighter, courtesy of Stefan Schindler (Brainbikerider). The design reminds me a little of Rob dasnewten, but Stefan puts his own unique spin on things. It is a good thing I don’t have access to this model because when I look at it I feel an irresistible urge to throw it across the room like a dart.

The Devil is in the Details

TBB first-timer Forest King (KingBrick) recently finished construction of his “Kodiak MK V air tug” and it is anything but boilerplate. There is so much going on, in fact, that I had trouble wrapping my mind around this model until I took a gander at the Killzone concept art that inspired the build. While the “Kodiak may have a few rough edges I appreciate that Forest is eschewing current trends in sci-fi building and blazing his own trail.

Founded in the 13th century on the site of a mosque, the famous Valencia Cathedral incorporates a number of architectural styles and houses many important cultural artifacts, to include the Holy Grail!
