Over 25 years of LEGO Star Wars, we’ve seen at least 10 different Tie Fighter variants but the beloved X-wing has only ever come in two flavors: your classic T-65, or the modestly upgraded Resistance era T-70. True, the “good guys” have a veritable alphabet of other craft, but surely the flagship fighter deserved a bit more variety? Builder Don Wilson imagines a New Republic-era fighter that takes a bolder approach to upgrading the X-wing design. Based on a fan design from Corellian Customs, the “Thumper” Heavy Artillery X-wing trades curves for sharper angles and muscle car power.
The Thumper’s swooshable S-foils have a slight forward sweep, reminiscent of a bird of prey when closed. The rectangular fuselage avoids the curves found in most rebel fighters, but Don doesn’t slack in detail, using dark green detailing and artfully used gaps in the bricks keeping things interesting.
The engines mark the biggest departure from other X-wing designs, with two thrusters per engine, exposed greebling, and sleek fins. I would have loved to see an X-wing like that roaring across an alien planet and ripping through enemy defenses with those heavy laser cannons.
Despite being one of the most commonly released LEGO subjects of all time, skilled builders keep coming up with amazing new takes on the X-wing, whether the aim is flawless screen accuracy or a whimsical franchise mash-up. Don’s LEGO interpretation of an inspiring fan design is a great addition to the X-wing canon.
