Just last year, LEGO brought fans one of the most iconic iterations of the Batmobile, the swooping, elegant design from Tim Burton’s 1989 Batman starring Michael Keaton in the titular role. The 1989 Batmobile (76139) was a big success and received rave reviews, including our own. Now LEGO is hoping to strike twice by returning to the same source material for another of Batman’s crazy rides. Revealed today, the new 1989 Batwing (76161) has 2,363 pieces and will retail for US $199.99 | UK £179.99 | EU €199.99 when it’s available for LEGO VIP members October 21. It will be available for everyone starting November 1, and will include three minifigures of Batman, The Joker, and the Boombox Goon.
The UCS-scale Batwing may be 1,000 pieces lighter than last year’s Batmobile, but it’s still a huge set, with the finished model measuring over 4” (11cm) high, 20” (52cm) long and 22” (58cm) wide.
The Batman minifigure appears to be identical to the one included in the Batmobile, with the special sweeping plastic cape incorporated into the cowl. This version of Joker is all-new, though, with the villain decked out as a mime. He’s accompanied by a mustachioed henchman, whom LEGO identifies merely as “Boombox goon” but is generally known as Lawrence. Just like with the Batmobile, the three minifigures come with a stand decorated with a pair of gargoyles.
In a first for a LEGO vehicle, the Batwing is also designed to be displayed mounted to a wall. The press release says this is enabled via a special brick, and although there are no images of the mechanism we suspect it’s the same piece used in the recent LEGO Art mosaic sets. We’ll be sure to bring you a full review of this set as soon as possible.
The set also includes a traditional stand for displaying the Batwing on a flat surface. The stand also includes the UCS-style info placard.
The Batwing’s cockpit opens and includes a variety of details inside, and LEGO says there are a variety of small Easter eggs planted throughout the set.

Fans of Batman and avid builders are in for some serious fun as they embark on their journey to construct the ultimate Super Hero vehicle in the LEGO® DC BATMAN™ collection.

Nielsen said: The emblematic set truly takes fans on a journey, as they immerse themselves into Gotham city and get hands-on with the set, using Batman, The Joker™ and Boombox goon minifigures to relive their favourite moments from the film. Fans can even create the infamous scene when The Joker barges in on the Dark Knight and utters his classic words “have you ever danced with the devil in the pale moonlight?”.
