2019 LEGO Advent Calendars, Day 5

Welcome to Day 5 of our LEGO Advent Calendar countdown. Each day, we’ll reveal the four mini-builds from the LEGO Harry Potter, LEGO Star Wars, LEGO Friends, and LEGO City 2019 advent calendars along with commentary from The Brothers Brick team.

If you’re opening one (or more) of these advent calendars along with us, we’ve made sure the pictures and commentary on each day’s models will be behind a jump so we don’t accidentally ruin the surprise. Let’s take a dive into Day 5!

For Day 5, we have Gryffindor flags from Harry Potter and Poe’s X-wing from Star Wars.

Dave: I guess after such an awesome start, the Harry Potter advent calendar needed a few “filler” models. However unlike the gun racks from the Star Wars advent, this flag stand fits the red and gold Gryffindor theme perfectly and adds a bit of set dressing because it is taller than most advent builds.

Poe’s X-wing is a great little build–a color update from the X-wing model in 2011’s advent. I still prefer the big version 75102 Poe’s X-wing Fighter because I like how the half-circle engines come together when the wings are closed.

Lino: “Did they say left at the flag or right?”

Andrew: A solid micro X-wing, though not too different from the many versions over the past few years.

Benjamin: Reminds me of the X-wings I imagined that I built as a kid in the early 90s. Except cool.

Ryan: Space Quidditch?

Continuing with Day 5, we have a Mia minidoll from Friends and an axe and log from City.

Dave: Last year, the Friends advent calendar featured large ornament builds and no minidolls. Looks like this year they are going with an adjusted route: small ornaments and one minidoll, though the purple sweater torso is exclusive to this calendar.

For City, we have a miniscule seven-piece build… actually it is more like a stack. The instructions have you build the log vertically like it is pictured above  which makes the wood look more like a giant chocolate birthday cake. The axe is brand new this year for the LEGO City Fire Rescue sets, so that is cool, but still only one minifigure so far?

Lino: “I wonder if they’ll like my Jack Nicholson impersonation?”

Andrew: Oooh, that’s a cool axe!

Whenever we can, we’ll mash up all the LEGO advent calendar builds from that specific day and see what kind of hilarity ensues. Please enjoy these hijinks!

Dave: The flag stand can also be a n X-wing stand, though the mini-model doesn’t quite look right with the wings closed. And THAT is how the log-chopping should look.

Lino: “Hey kid, there was this flag about a mile back, was I supposed to go left or right of it?”

Benjamin: Dang that girl is strong! She is swinging that axe with a single arm and chopping the log in half like it’s butter. With Friends like these, who needs lumberjacks?

Matt: Heeeere’s Mia!

After numerous attempts to get the picture before the round bricks would roll and fall, I did resort to using some blu tack to hold them in place long enough to get the photo. Good eye!
