2019 LEGO Advent Calendars, Day 1

It’s that time of year again! Break out the hot cocoa and stoke the fire, because The Brothers Brick is counting down to Christmas the only way we know how: with LEGO Advent Calendars! Each day, we’ll reveal the three mini-builds from the LEGO Harry Potter, LEGO Star Wars, LEGO Friends, and LEGO City 2019 advent calendars along with crazy commentary from our team.

If you’re opening one (or more) of these advent calendars along with us, we’ve made sure the pictures and commentary on each day’s models will be behind a jump so we don’t accidentally ruin the surprise. So without further ado, here we go!

The 2019 LEGO advent calendars welcomed a new member of the family this year, Harry Potter! Here is the titular character along with a First Order Star Destroyer from Star Wars.

Dave: I love opening the LEGO advent calendars, and this year we have four of them! Squeee!!!  I can’t wait to see the ingenious (or not-so-ingenious) ways these tiny pieces are built. This year the Harry Potter calendar is brand new, so I hope they hit it out of the park and not Avada Kedavra all over themselves. We are starting off strong with an exclusive minifigure right off the bat featuring Harry during his first year at Hogwarts sporting a scratchy dark blue sweater knitted for him by Mrs. Weasley. Ten points to Gryffendor!

For Star Wars, we have a 14-part First Order Star Destroyer. While I appreciate the attempt, this ship just doesn’t inspire my imagination. I think I could use it as-if and throw it into a rock work build and no one would notice. New challenge: hiding advent calendar builds in plain sight!

Lino: Expecto Empirus!

Daniel: The First Order star destroyer is okay, if a tad flat . I think they could have added a few more details without using that many more parts.

Benjamin: At first I thought that was a tombstone for Voldemort to rise from the dead. Then I realized it was a spaceship. An ugly one.

Andrew: Use the Force, Harry!

From the LEGO Friends and LEGO City 2019 advent calendars, we have a heart ornament and a snow plow four-wheeler.

Dave: This year the Friends calendar will continue with the spectacular theme of creating ornaments with a few twists. They have a lot to live up to with the success of last year’s calendar, so my expectations are high. This heart ornament is a good start, and the heart-shaped plate and quarter-circles tiles are great pieces I don’t have too many of in my collections. I like it better than last year’s heart ornament (which also came on Day 1 but was considerably bigger). Is a new heartfelt tradition brewing?

For City, we have a snow plow. It feels oddly lonely without a minifigure to sit on it, but it is a substantial build coming out of a single day’s compartment. (Side note: LEGO updated the doors of the advent calendars finally! They tear less and are very easy to open. Thanks LEGO!)

Lino: I’ll have this happiness cleaned up real quick!

Daniel: Not much use unless you are plowing a walkway, or a bunch of toys.

Benjamin: The heart is kind of cute, but that plow is half as wide as it needs to be. Nice grippy tires, though.

Ryan: Scoops ahoy!

Andrew: Oooo! An overgrown purple tombstone! Spooky!

Whenever we can, we will mash up all the LEGO advent calendar builds from that specific day and see what kind of hilarity ensues. Please enjoy these hijinks!

Dave: Harry frantically tried to ignite his wooden lightsaber as the mysterious Federation ship shot a heart attack at him, freshly acquired from their stop in the Sys-star System.

Lino: –Morgan Freeman narration voice– “In retrospect it wasn’t the dumbest idea Harry ever had, but it would rank somewhere in the top five at least. New rules had to be written at Hogwarts that day…”

Daniel: Harry Potter calling Captain Hugs.

Ryan: Is that Harry’s hyperdrive kamikaze!?
