2018 LEGO Advent Calendars, Day 17

Welcome to Day 17 of our LEGO Advent Calendar countdown. Each day, we’ll reveal the three mini-builds from the LEGO Star WarsLEGO Friends, and LEGO City 2018 advent calendars along with commentary from The Brothers Brick team.

If you’re opening one (or more) of these advent calendars along with us, we’ve made sure the pictures and commentary on each day’s models will be behind a jump so we don’t accidentally ruin the surprise. What does Day 17 have in store?

For Day 17, we have a Guavian Security Soldier from Star Wars, a roller skate ornament from Friends, and baker from City.

Dave: The Star Wars advent continues to give us relatively rare minifgs, so an extra Guavian Soldier is nice (why wasn’t there ever a Guavian battle pack?). I challenge our readers to make a better roller skate in 25 pieces or less. And the baker from City is a decent figure, with that sweater only in a few sets like 10261 Roller Coaster and originally appearing in 21310 Old Fishing Store. Is it the new winter-themed torso that will be in every advent from now until forever?

Edwinder: I’m not liking that skate. The colors are all just weird. I’m beginning to wonder if the designers behind the Friends themes have a very strict requirement to use a certain palette.

Andrew:  It’s not just the color scheme — I thought this was an odd train until Edwinder said it was a roller skate. For Star Wars in The Force Awakens, Bala-Tik was only accompanied by two cybernetic foot soldiers in 75180 Rathtar Escape, so it’s great to get another one of this relatively rare minifig. I also love that tray of baked goods! I really love the cableknit sweater, but it seems like it’s everywhere now.

ChrisThe minifigures are what they are. They’re not bad at all, but pretty uninteresting on their own. That roller skate is something else though. The colors are very distinctly early 1990s, and they were just as tacky then as they are now. The design isn’t too bad if you say “build a roller skate two-bricks wide and use the simplest elements possible” but otherwise I’m not impressed.

Rod:  That roller skate is awful. Off the top of my head I can think of about a dozen totally legal ways it could have been better. I like the minifigs, but is the guy in the jumper supposed to be a baker? You’re going to end up with wool in the cupcake icing aren’t you? Not sure rough woolen material is a good catering uniform.

Edwinder: Eat or be eaten! Guavaian Security Soldiers must taste good.

Nick: Cookies? Sell that to Kanjiklub!

Andrew: The Guavian Death Gang gets its just desserts.

ChrisYa, he was sucrose to escaping the Rathtar, but there’s no way to sweet talk his way out now.

Hmm, that sweater in combination with the orange ‘stache makes the minifig look Northern English, I think, or possibly Scots or Irish. Might be prejuidiced, though.

“Aye, herre be cookies forr the fain laddies en lassies…” (Perhaps not…)

That’s a really bizarre-looking Deadpool. Also, challenge accepted! I made my roller skate out of the minifig roller skate element, so done in one.
