Announcing Philly Brick Fest: April 23 – 26, 2015

Registration is now open for the next Philly Brick Fest, taking place from April 23rd-26th at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center. The full registration is discounted until December 1st, so get your tickets now.

Philly
Brick Fest, the 4-day Fan of LEGO Convention returns to the Greater
Philadelphia Expo Center April 23 – 26, 2015 in Oaks, PA.

The 2015 event will boast more than 90,000 square feet of fan built LEGO creations, interactive building challenges and activities, and merchandise from LEGO resellers and customizers. The 4-day convention brings together Fans of LEGO to play games, learn new building techniques, meet new members of the community, and most of all have fun.

Philly Brick Fest is a LEGO Convention for Fans of LEGO (FOLs). This is a 4-day private event from April 23 – 26, 2015 consisting of games, seminars, building activities, giveaways, and more. Registered attendees also have the ability display their LEGO creations sure to inspire the general public. Registered attendees also have a chance to meet, mingle, and create new friendships with other FOLs.

Brick Fest Live is the portion of the event that is open to the public. During the public sessions, attendees will have a chance to see the amazing FOL creations in addition to the hands-on attractions facilitated by Brick Fest Live.

Diplomacy in the Dark

This dark scene by Disco86 lit up my day. Besides being a well-thought and nicely posed scene, the lighting and editing of the picture are top-notch. The elves look like they aren’t sure what to make of each other and the lighting really gives it a creepy, other-worldly air.

BURN•E changes the lights

Our very own Simon Liu just built the cutest little BURN•E and I had to post him. He is instantly recognizable and the stickering makes him nearly perfect. I want him here, changing lights in my house.

Review of GI Bricks Exclusive Crate Packs featuring BrickArms and Brick Mercenaries

I just picked up a Claymore Crate from GI Bricks to review and Julie sent me the other two packs as well. All of these packs come with a BrickArms crate with special printing and four BrickArms weapons painted by Brick Mercenaries. They are available exclusively from GI Bricks.

The Bloodshed Crate

This pack comes in a brown BrickArms crate with a splash of red blood printed on one side. The printing is very nicely done, as we have come to expect from BrickArms. The crate itself would actually be quite useful in a battle scene, perhaps with a slain minifig leaning against it. The pack includes a Claymore, Damien Blade, Havoc Blade and Killstrike Saber. What makes these weapons really special is the paint job by Josh Baum of Brick Mercenaries. The paint looks professionally done and he was able to recreate an accurate representation of blood-soaked weapons, rather than randomly applying red paint, as is so often done. The paint also feels very durable. On the GI Bricks website, it says that these are for display purposes only, but I think they would stand up to light play. They will get scratched up if left in a bin with other weapons, but normal handling isn’t going to affect them.

Oni-ni-kanabō

Stuart Delahay just released this big, red creature into the wild and I think he’s rather cool. I’m especially liking the skull necklace. Nice use of the Ninja-go skull for a pendant. I know he’s supposed to be bad and all that, but I don’t think he’s a bad guy at all. It looks to me like he’s just giving directions. Something like “Oh, you took the wrong turn. Go back to the main road and then turn left by Old Man Jenkins Barn. Continue on for 3 miles…”.

Maloko The Curse Bearer

Djordje has been creating some fabulous, original monsters but this one is my favorite by far. I love the giant yellow eye, the tongue and the malicious grin. There is some really nice part use in there too. The rubber Hero Factory belts make a great mouth and the use of pneumatic ‘T’s enabled him to make this a nice, tight creation.

Ask a Lemur – Illegal Builds, Fan Conventions and Kids Online

Hello again, Dear Readers!

It’s the TBB Intern Lemur, here to answer your questions and do what I can to give you some insight into LEGO, the fan community and TBB! Give me a minute to catch my breath. I’ve been cleaning the bottom of the pool here in the TBB compound. It’s way easier to do when they let me drain it, but Carter was getting in his laps and Caylin said it needed cleaned immediately. They don’t call her the ‘Goddess’ for nothing! When she says “jump”, you jump. Even if it’s into the deep end. She was right though. It did need cleaning. The weekend pool parties get kind of nuts around here. I’m mostly done, except I’m not sure how to get Iain’s boat up off the bottom.

Oh, that reminds me. I was right about last week. I got a serious talking-to about mentioning a certain other person’s personal water-craft. Won’t make that mistake again. Anyway, I’m taking a break now, down in Ralph’s basement lab. He doesn’t take much notice of me so the lab is a good place to get away for awhile. Especially when I’m trying to answer your questions. There are some scary things going on down here, but I just pull a blanket over my head and try not to listen to the maniacal laughter. It’s all good, as long as you don’t taste anything while you are down here. That was another mistake I won’t make again.

So, on to your questions. Boy, there were some good ones this week!

Mesmerizing patterns

Arthur Gugick is working on a series of patterns for a “Mathematical Quilt” where each patch depicts a different math concept. Check out the designs so far on his Flickr album.

Unlocked

This one tricked me. Gilcelio built this very realistic padlock and hasp, put it on a lovely brick-built chest, and I didn’t realize it was LEGO until after I clicked on it. Very impressive. I love realistic, full-size recreations of everyday objects.

Surf’s Up!

Christopher Roberts built this as a birthday present for a surfing friend’s sixteenth birthday. Pretty Rad! I really like the pose he was able to achieve with those brick hinges. His color choices really make it look like she is wearing a wetsuit, which you need for surfing here in the great state of Washington!.

Scorpion Starfighter

This little beauty, by Jackson, has a lot going for it. The beefy engines give it somewhat of a ‘chibi’ look which I’m liking here. The color selection and precise sticker arrangement work together to give it a nice, clean feel.

Leg Warmers and Leotards, Mullets and Mini-Trucks.

Lino Martins takes us back to the 80s with this custom mini-truck build. The color scheme and giant speakers in the bed give us a clue as to where we are, but it’s the owners of this fine machine that leave us no doubt. Lino has all the details right, including the woman’s teased hair, belted leotard and legwarmers along with the man’s mullet, pink shirt and white jacket. This build takes all of us 80s children back to the future and makes us wonder what we were thinking.
