Tanks and fighter planes, dioramas of World War II battles, dreadnoughts and battleships — LEGO builders have an obvious fascination with the arms and armor of the military-industrial complex. Find all these LEGO weapons of mass destruction right here on The Brothers Brick.

Ralph Savelsberg’s 1946 Mercury Sportsman “Woody”

Ralph Savelsberg (Flickr) makes amazing airplanes, to be sure, but I also love his wheeled vehicles.

His latest car is a 1946 Mercury “Woody.” Perfect for that trip to the beach you’ve been planning for the first day of summer.

Here’s a bonus creation for all of you pining for a new airplane from Ralph — a US Navy QF-4S Phantom II:

Fedde makes LEGO go *boom*

Smoke and other ethereal effects are particularly difficult to accomplish in LEGO. Fedde‘s skeleton crew demonstrates how just a few white and clear pieces can imply explosive action:

The backpacks are also very nice.

ZED’s Autobot Ka-50 “Black Shark” Transformer

Constructed for a competition on the Russian-language LEGO fan site DoubleBrick.ru, Brickshelfer ZED‘s Ka-50 “Black Shark” helicopter transforms into a “Night Hunter” Autobot:

Decorated in Ukrainian livery, ZED’s Autobot looks ready to leap into action and protect humanity.

Gizmodo interviews BrickArms’ Will Chapman

For those of you who haven’t had the pleasure of attending a presentation by BrickArms founder Will Chapman, Gizmodo has a great interview you should go read now.

A brief excerpt:

Jesús Diaz: I think the simplification of the real world weapons is amazing. How is the creative process? How do you decide on one weapon or another?
Will Chapman: Mostly, Ian (my youngest son) finds a weapon interesting and asks if we could make it. It is that simple. Once he finds one he likes, I study it and I abstract the design into minifig-scale.

New helicopter models from Ralph Savelsberg

Ralph Savelsberg latest military vehicles are a pair of helicopters — a CH-46 Sea Knight (above) and a Mi-24 “Hind”. Click the pics to check them out on Flickr.

Auto by Otto

Otto captures the RAMM style beautifully with his latest vehicle, Sicherheit Auto. Otto gets bonus points for building an interior that fits several minifigs.

Savoia S-21 seaplane from Porco Rosso, by Uspez Morbo

Hayao Miyazaki’s Porco Rosso never saw theatrical release here in the United States, and since it was released after I left Japan, I had to wait 13 years to see it (when it was released on DVD in 2005). The movie was worth the wait, and I just love Uspez Morbo‘s interpretation of protagonist Porco Rosso’s seaplane.

See lots more pictures on MOCPages, including the highly detailed cockpit (complete with foot pedals!). Great stuff.

Gizmodo interviews Ralph Savelsberg

Gizmodo commenters asked for more interviews of the builders featured there, and contributor Jesús Díaz obliged, first interviewing Tim Goddard. Jesús’ latest interview is with Ralph Savelsberg, whose 1/36-scale military aircraft have wowed TBB readers recently.

Head on over to Gizmodo to read the interview with Ralph, but here are a few new photos from Ralph’s Flickr photostream.

Oh, and just to prove just how huge Ralph’s B-1B bomber is, here it is with his F-15 and F16:

Nick Dean’s vehicles of the Royal Austrian Mechanized Military

In the not-too-distant future, Austria will apparently be a kingdom again, and it will have a formidable military full of big gray vehicles.

The latest trio of creations by Nick Dean (Flickr) is a set of vehicles from the Royal Austrian Mechanized Military (RAMM). My favorite is the Schäferhund Infantry Fighting Vehicle (above).

Check out more RAMM vehicles on Next-Gen or Flickr.

The 1/36-scale air superiority of Ralph Savelsberg

Ralph Savelsberg (Flickr) builds things with wings and things with wheels. In an increasingly studless LEGO world (no pun intended), Ralph unashamedly shows his studs in his incredibly realistic vehicles. From a B-1B Lancer and Su-27 Flanker to an E-2C Hawkeye and F-15E Eagle, the level of detail is amazing. The camouflage on the Soviet Su-27 is particularly striking.34th BS 'Thunderbirds' B-1B Lancer

I’d bookmarked Ralph Savelsberg‘s amazing photoset of military aircraft on Flickr to blog later, but we have a bit of a backlog right now, so Ed Diment‘s reminder was very much appreciated.

Doctor Sinister’s Adjudicator tanks

Andrew Summersgill (Flickr) sends word of a cool blue pair of futuristic tanks he’s built.

I figured a bigger solo shot would work better here, so check out the pair of ’em on Tabletown.co.uk.

Ed Diment builds the HMS Edinburgh in only two years

Since commenters inevitably ask “How long did that take to build?” (answer: I rarely know), I figured I’d get the first question about Ed Diment‘s H.M.S. Edinburgh out of the way now. :-D
