Greetings, cat!

What’s interesting about many of the entries for the Ma.K Starfighter Contest is that many builders profess a prior unfamiliarity with the source material. As Shannon Sproule says, “It’s always good to widen one’s library of inspiration.”

Cephalofoil

The Ma.K starfighter contest continues to draw out excellent entries. Ted Andes dives in with his “Hammerhead” fighter, which features a cool custom sticker and can indeed fit a fig in its cockpit.

I also really like his “true” Ma.K hardsuit, which uses wrenches/clips as an ammo chain:

Ma.K MH 30 Kraft Falter by Fredoichi

The Ma.K starfighter contest is yielding some amazing entries. Even though we can’t feature them all, a few stand out that we don’t want our readers to miss. While Fredoichi‘s entry might not do especially well at high speeds in an atmosphere, his airplane doors at odd angles, minifig helmets as vents, and every curvy piece imaginable capture the Maschinen Krieger aesthetic perfectly.

(And don’t miss Fredo’s recent sky-fighters, which we just haven’t gotten around to, despite obvious blogworthiness…)

Ma.K NPU

It took me a few seconds to recognize a Lego part on Adrian Florea‘s newest creation. Either I’m a noob or Adrian used some really obscure pieces to good effect. The only non-purist element is a painted canopy.

More LEGO Ma.K.

I tend to avoid blogging competition entries of things I’m judging to keep my favourites secret until the contest ends (Oct. 1 in this case). Luckily Tim Zarki (spook) claims he’s unable to make a starfighter so has built a non-contest mecha. I

MaK SAFS Space Type Pit-Viper by Tromas

TR Brownridge (.Tromas) has posted another inspiration model for the MaK Starfighter Contest. It’s great to see a classic MaK hardsuit, and this one has some lovely details — not least of which the sticker/decal use. Notice in particular the thin warning stripe below the floodlight on the front.

Maschinen Krieger (MaK) Starfighter Contest

TR Brownridge (.Tromas) is organising a starfighter contest based on Maschinen Krieger (MaK). Since my love of MaK is far from secret I encourage everyone to give it a go.

MASCHINEN KRIEGER STARFIGHTER CONTEST

To get to the important details first: it runs from August 1, 2011 – October 1, 2011 in the Starfighters Group so head over there to play.

I’ve copied the rules and prizes appears below to get you inspired.

The RULES are pretty simple:

  1. Make it look like it belongs in the MaK universe
  2. Must be a starfighter (same rules as the group: no frigates, corvettes etc.)
  3. Must be mini-fig scale. It doesn’t have to have a pilot (a lot the Strahl units are autonomous), but it does have to be to that scale
  4. Custom stickers/parts, clones brands etc are all permitted (MaK is after all, all about kit-bashing)
  5. Must be a new design
  6. 2 entries per person (in case anyone wants to do both a Merc & Strahl unit :)
  7. Submit a single photo of the model to the contest thread in the Starfighters Group
  8. Contest Timeline is August 1, 2011 to October 1, 2011 (I want to give you all lots of time to get creative)

PRIZES:
Brick-A-Thon has generously helped me out with the prize money, so I am happy to say that the amounts are higher than what I was initially planning:

  • 1st Place – $75.00 Bricklink Coupon
  • 2nd Place – $50.00 Bricklink Coupon
  • 3rd Place – $25.00 Bricklink Coupon

All entries will be judged by myself, Peter (peterlmorris) and Tim (gambort). Once the winners have been decided, I will notify Brick-A-Thon and they will apply the coupons to your Bricklink account.

MAK “2rD” – Wüste Kröte

Adrian Florea has managed to sneak away from work long enough to share this excellent creation with us. I’m not sure if it’s based on an actual Maschinen Krieger model, but it certainly fits that style. It’s a tough style to render in the brick, and this is a great job.

Tim Zarki’s adorable MaK-inspired hardsuit has me going “Awwww!”

Long-time readers of this blog should know by now that I’m a sucker for small adorable things. Tim Zarki isn’t helping my addiction by posting this cute little hardsuit inspired by Maschinen Krieger (often abbreviated Ma. K. or MaK):

That’s a Technic figure helmet. I may just have to dig mine out of my “useless” bin and give this one a try myself. (I know, I know, there are no useless LEGO pieces!)

H&V 01B – Space Combat Hardsuit with M-SB Pack, by Tim Zarki

It’s been a little while since we’ve featured a hardsuit inspired by Maschinen Krieger (or Ma.K) — a series of plastic models designed by Kow Yokoyama in the mid 1980’s. Here’s a nice one by Tim Zarki:

Spartan M65 Hardsuit by lego2000

lego2000/m20xr has designed a hardsuit reminiscent of Maschinen Krieger, and it’s really rather cool. Here it is with an “optional 75 mm chain gun”:

MaK UDK38 Schenkel Diorama by Tim Gould

Back in July I blogged Tim Gould’s LDraw version of a “Maschinen Krieger UDK38 Schenkel.” Now, Tim has posted pictures of his design in real bricks, complete with a nice diorama to showcase it:
