High fantasy? Or mere child’s play...

What at first glance may appear to be a LEGO creation with an identity crisis is builder Nate Chiles way of reminding us that a little imagination goes a long way. This 2-in-one LEGO creation “tells the story of that imagination that we all had (or have) by showing kids playing (on the left) and the stories imagination turns that play into (on the right).”

It’s a very relatable message, beautifully illustrated. The themes, shapes, and proportions of the two scenes mirror one another perfectly, and I love the way the clouds surrounding the tower suggest an impassible floor-is-lava -type scenario being played out in these young adventurers’ minds.

LEGO Star Wars before the first LEGO Star Wars sets [Feature]

It’s hard to believe twenty years have passed since the release of the first official LEGO Star Wars sets. Unofficially, children and adults alike have been building Star Wars-themed models since the first film hit theaters in 1977. While many of these custom builds have been lost to history, some photographs of Star Wars models made their way into LEGO Club magazines like the UK’s Bricks ‘n Pieces and North America’s LEGO Mania Magazine. One of the earliest models I was able to find was this AT-AT walker from The Empire Strikes Back (1980). That movie was only two years old in 1982, which is when twelve year old Philip Dodge had his model featured in the Summer 1982 issue of Bricks ‘n Pieces. While the photography might not have aged well, his AT-AT looks amazing for having been built during the 1980s.

The LEGO Foundation awards $100m to Sesame Workshop to aid children affected by Rohingya and Syrian refugee crises [News]

The LEGO Foundation recently announced a $100 million grant to Sesame Workshop to support children affected by the Rohingya and Syrian refugee crises. The LEGO Foundation is the charitable organization affiliated with LEGO Group owners, and is itself a 25% owner of the LEGO Group. The grant is being disbursed over the following 5 years, with funds being released as milestones are met. The partnership with BRAC, the IRC (International Rescue Committee) and New York University’s Global TIES for Children will reach children affected by the crises with play-based learning opportunities.
