For the record, Han Solo shot first

LEGO builder Hannes Tscharner (aka Marshal Banana) has reminded me of one of the hottest debates in sci-fi fandom, that being; what the heck is up with E.T.’s finger? I mean, seriously is it a Slim Jim with a lightbulb on the end or what? Also, having nothing to do with nerdy fanboys debating online is this awesome Star Wars replica of Han Solo’s blaster. The handsome DL-44 borrows design DNA from the Mauser C96 but added a scope and a bunch of other greebly bits including the “mystery disk”. What does the mystery disk do? It shoots mouthy Rodian bounty hunters right in the aedeagus, that’s what! This movie-accurate replica is 1:1 so you can hold it and practice your lovable scoundrel smile in the mirror. Isn’t that what we all do when not debating E.T.’s dubious finger?

Tapping into my inner Han Solo, I've built this LEGO replica of the iconic Star Wars DL-44 Hero Blaster!

Retro Transformer goodness

I remember when the first wave of Transformers reached the US; these toys were an instant must-have for everyone I knew. (And woe betide anyone who got to Toys-R-Us a few minutes late and had to settle for the not-quite-as-cool “Go-Bots” toys.) Alex Jones (aka Orion Pax) has been transporting us to those good times with a selection of Generation 1 Transformers, and he’s back with another round of stellar creations. Each model is a combination of clever building techniques and detailing, with a bonus of great retro presentation.

LEGO 10252 Beetle BUMBLEBEE

This is not the first time we’ve seen an amazing LEGO version of Bumblebee from Alex. (Has it really been ten years?) This upgraded 2019 version makes use of a lot of parts that weren’t around in 2009. Bumblebee’s vehicle mode is clearly based on LEGO set 10252 Volkswagen Beetle. There are a few design tweaks, but the beetle’s shaping is instantly recognizable. The yellow recolor alone would be impressive enough, but the fact that it transforms as well? That’s just nutty levels of awesome.

Alex didn’t stop there, though. There’s a giant selection of transforming goodness!

Who shot first?

Was it Greedo, or was it Han? How about Markus Rollb├╝hler? Markus wanted to gear up for the new Solo: A Star Wars Story movie coming out next week by building Solo’s DL-44 Heavy Blaster for a contest hosted by theRogueBricks Flickr group. He has done such a wonderful job recreating this Star Wars that I’m almost convinced he personally presented the gun to the space cowboy himself. I enjoy Markus’ attention to detail, including the textured leather grip. From a distance, it almost looks like the real deal!
