2018 LEGO Advent Calendars, Day 4

Welcome to Day 4 of our LEGO Advent Calendar countdown. Each day, we’ll reveal the three mini-builds from the LEGO Star WarsLEGO Friends, and LEGO City 2018 advent calendars along with commentary from The Brothers Brick team.

If you’re opening one (or more) of these advent calendars along with us, we’ve made sure the pictures and commentary on each day’s models will be behind a jump so we don’t accidentally ruin the surprise. What is in store from Advent Day 4?

For Day 4, we have a Republic Fighter Tank from Star Wars, a festive hearth ornament from Friends, and a dog from City.

Dave: The mini-Republic Fighter Tank isn’t a bad build, just a bit blocky. Let’s be glad they haven’t included any accompanying Battle Droids–those things are like the infectious disease of the LEGO Star Wars universe since they pop up everywhere. The fireplace scene from Friends is decent enough and the toy soldier is passable at this scale. And from City, although I love me a LEGO Husky dog, no building of anything kills it for me.

Daniel: This version of the Clone Wars Tank feels really clunky to me, especially with more visible studs than I would like. On the Friends side, I do like the toy soldier. It is very recognizable at this scale.

Andrew: I’m a sucker for LEGO dogs, so it’s great to see the awesome husky again. The Republic Fighter Tank is a great little rendition of the fantastic set 75182 from 2017.

Rod: That toy soldier is excellent — a (nut)cracking little model.

Nick: Going all EU on us with the Star Wars models, huh? I’ll take the nostalgia trip to the OG Battlefront days with the Fighter Tank.

Chris: I’m going to call this day a win-win-win. The Hovertank is pretty great for the scale, and the Friends hearth is awesome, especially that toy soldier. The Husky doesn’t have a lot of inherent play features, but like Andrew I’m always happy to get another dog. It’s interesting to note though, that for the City Day 4 “build,” the only building that can be done with these elements is to stick the turkey leg on the dog’s back. No other connections are possible using just these elements.

Edwinder: Friends win yet again! Another wonderful trinket to be hung on the Christmas tree. The toy soldier is instantly recognizable, but that fireplace ember should be a flame element though. Star Wars fails me yet again, and while the City pieces are great for parts, they lack any creativity.

    @Purple Dave. Yeah, there’s no way to add the “flame plume” piece to the hearth instead?

    And the rendition of the Star Wars tank might not have been too successful…

    @Håkan:
    Actually, it’d be easy. Leave the double-jumper where it is, but pull the two 1×1 round plates and replace them with a 1×1 tile w/ clip and you’ve got a place to attach the flame. They’ve even done this several times in other sets, so it’s not like nobody in Billund has ever thought of it before.
