Bionicle’s Mata Nui finally appears in LEGO form in stunning fan model

For Bionicle Fans, the Great Spirit Mata Nui is more than a robot and not quite a god and is pretty much the most important figure in the complex cosmology of LEGO’s beloved franchise being a creator, protector, and the land itself. But as important as he was, Mata Nui never appeared in his true form in any official sets (only as a Glatorian Legend). Bionicle fan GiiKei remedies this omission with a brick-built version that features incredible articulation and custom lighting. Even if you know nothing about Bionicle lore, it’s easy to appreciate this square-jawed gentle giant.

Celebrate Bionicle’s 20th anniversary with a map of Mata Nui island made from pieces of the LEGO 31203 World Map [News]

Today LEGO fans come together to celebrate the LEGO Bionicle theme that ended its run in 2010. Since then, August 10th or 8/10 in American date notation format is bestowed by fans to be 810NICLE day. Builders and designers commemorate their much-beloved franchise with builds, art, and varied ways to revive their love for the theme. Joining the celebrations, LEGO designer Nicolas Vás used LEGO elements from the 31203 World Map and transformed it into a map of Mata Nui island, the locale for the early years of Bionicle adventures.

Microscale Mata Nui

After writing about LEGO for nearly a decade, it’s rare that I see a mashup that’s new, let alone one that’s done excellently. But this build by Mansur Soeleman brought me that rare delight in the form of a Bionicle creation made of system pieces and done in microscale. The lush green island is Kini Nui, the temple at the heart of Mata Nui in the Bionicle universe, and it evokes the verdant foliage of the island’s jungle well. The build is loaded with brand new elements which I’m excited to see put to such great use, such as the white 1x8x3 slopes for the four pillars on the temple.

Side note: I’m feeling an urge to play Halo now, for some reason…
