This LEGO Monkey’s Gone to Heaven

Sun Wukong, aka the Monkey King, or just plain Monkey, is the most enduring mythological hero in the world, inspiring so many retellings, including LEGO’s own Monkey Kid franchise. Chinese Builder Jin Chen took on the legendary character at the height of his power, armed with the
Ruyi Jingu Bang staff and standing atop a fallen demon. Monkey’s white face markings are based on the traditional depiction seen in Chinese Opera.

Jin’s makes excellent use of the range of elements in pearl gold to sculpt Monkey’s ornate armor, tightly packing every surface with horns and shuriken. The tattered cape is especially dramatic with its mix of rounded tail elements and angular plates.

NovHENber hatched a new challenge, now let’s count the LEGO chickens! [Feature]

This November saw a new LEGO challenge: NovHENber. Participants were invited to build chickens during the month, and many AFOLs answered the call. With the last chickens hatched, we checked in with builders behind the challenge – Syrdarian and Carson Lacy – and cooped up all the hens from the inaugural event.

Hellboy will always look this good

Ron Perlman’s take on big red is one of the great on-screen superheroes – Hellboy fits him like a glove. But in comics, Hellboy’s form is a lot more malleable under the pen of creator Mike Mignola, who brings an expressionist approach to the hero. Sometimes he’s a hulking beast, other times he’s downright willowy, as in this haunting MOC from builder Jin Chen. Jin faithfully captures Mignola’s dramatic pose and Hellboy’s chiseled body. Excellent photography uses shadows to fill in detail, in Mignola fashion.

HellBoy

Jin had applied his LEGO artistry to Hellboy before with this smiling bust of the big guy.

A majestic bust carved from LEGO captures the spirit of revolution

Marble? Plaster? Jin Chen has chosen LEGO for this rugged bust. Titled La Marseillaise, the face is modeled on the revolutionary spirit of France as sculpted by François Rude on the Arc de Triomphe. The monochromatic palette with a single point of light showcases the wonderful depth of this carved brick build.

Jin, who won LEGO Masters China in 2023, displayed the bust, along with his other incredible LEGO sculptures, at China’s AFOL fest last month where it won a trophy for best styling.

Tragically, the delicate bust did not survive the journey home. The revolution is over.
