This convoy is armed and armored and ready for action

Building a properly scaled motor vehicle can be a challenge, considering the unnatural proportions of the LEGO minifigure. That challenge was undeniably met by Robson M who has not only built a pair of well-proportioned vehicles scaled to fit their LEGO occupants but also meet the additional challenge of making the convoy military armored vehicles. I was thoroughly impressed by the Humvee (on the left), and the Oshkosh M-ATV (on the right) based on the build alone, but when I looked up the reference material, I was even more impressed by so many amazing details captured in plastic.

Humvee & Oshkosh M-ATV

For the Humvee, I think my favorite detail, besides the front grill, is the round tile for the air intake on the front right fender. The Oshkosh features a roof-mounted armored turret with a gun, and there is plenty of room in the back for any extra gear needed. I bet there is even room for a case or two of MRE rations.

Tiny troops with tan tanks

Chris (Ironsniper) has been working on a near-future tank he’s dubbed the ADT100 “Coyote”. Of particular note is Chris’ use of a Technic ball joint to connect the gun to the turret.

Chris also posted a follow-up tank dubbed A2N8 “Anubis”, accompanied by a nice diorama, but I prefer the sleeker turret on his Coyote.

And in case Chris’ tan troops get injured, Project Azazel comes in from the desert with this medevac Humvee, bulbous in its capacity to bring comfort to the wounded:

Despite their square shape, Humvees are notoriously challenging to build properly in LEGO. Also notice how both builders have placed their models on a simple brick-built base, which adds a lot to the presentation (I assume it’s coincidence that they’re both dark tan).

Avenger, US Army style

The High Mobility Military Wheeled Vehicle, better known as the Humvee or Hummer, has been the standard general purpose vehicle of the US Military since the mid-Eighties. As such it is a popular subject for military builders. Despite the easily recognisable angular shape, it’s not an easy vehicle to build properly, certainly not if you want it to look decent with minifigs. In the last weeks Project Azazel has been steadily cranking out new versions, but I am going to highlight one.

Humvee "Avenger"

It is the Humvee Avenger, a version used by the US Army for air defence armed with Stinger missiles and a .50 machine gun. The body of the model has a width of seven studs, which is an excellent compromise between detail and interior space on the one hand and a size that does not make the minifig look like a midget on the other hand. The presentation doesn’t hurt either. I’d love to see one in woodland camouflage or a maxi ambulance next.
