About Josh

Josh is 30+ years old and has more Lego than he has hair. Which really isn't saying much. He builds mostly medieval creations, but dabbles in other genres. He is also a father and uses his kids as an excuse to buy Lego. That justification isn't working as well as it used to, so if you can think of a better justification, feel free to contact him. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, Josh's Brickshelf gallery gets messier and messier. Josh also has a Flickr gallery, if you care about such things. He goes by the name "floodllama" there. If you wonder why he goes by "floodllama", you've obviously never owned a llama in flood. Josh feels sorry for you.

The Feiry Blastous Dragon

Breanne Sledge, the Queen of all things Bionicle or Hero Factory, just gave birth to this awesome thing. I never cease to be amazed by the creatures she is able to create. Amazing…simply amazing.

Europe in Pictures

This pictorial map of Europe, by Matt Bace, is a ton of fun! The map itself is very well conceived and colors are really grab the eye, but the crown jewels of this piece are the little ‘icons’ that represent each country. The micro-builds are really fun and totally make this piece. My favorite is the Colosseum in Rome. Which is yours?

Win a prize by following the Rival’s Tournament!

The folks over at Merlin’s Beard are hosting a tournament and you can get in on the fun! For some time now they have been fighting among themselves in what have come to be called “The Brawls”. Think LEGO Castle Fight Club. Now they are holding the first Lands of Roawia Rival’s Tournament and the contestants have been chosen from the ranks of the Brawlers.

“But how can I get involved since I’m not one of the Brawlers?”, you ask. Good question. You can follow the tournament by filling out their March-Madness-style bracket and posting it on their forums. The winner of the bracket challenge will win their choice of two prizes. If you want to get involved in the Brawling and perhaps be in the next Tournament, you can sign up for that as well!

A Desert Apprentice

I really like the look and feel of this bit of desert by Jonas Wide. It depicts a merchant’s apprentice as he leads two heavily laden camels across the desert. Jonas really captured the look of wind-swept sand dunes and the subdued color scheme is surprisingly attention-grabbing. I have to admit that the current fad of putting a border around every castle creation is getting old but it really works here. The stark black outline makes the random patterns of the sand dunes pop!

Merlin’s Beard: A new LEGO Castle site

There is a new hangout for Medieval-Minded among us! Merlin’s Beard was started earlier this year and it is doing quite well. If you are at all interested in the ‘Castle’ genre, historical or fantastical, you really should check it out. There is a lot going on over there, from challenges and tournaments to convention-planning and role play. The Lands of Roawia Roleplay (formerly Lands of Classic-Castle) is hosted there, along with the infamous Rival Brawls. If you want to hang out with friends, new and old, stop in, put your feet up and knock back a few cold ones with the folks at Merlin’s Beard!

Watch out for those monkeys!

Grant Davis has given this pirate a really bad day. But it’s in a really nice build, so I guess it’s all okay. Just don’t turn your back on any monkeys that might be lurking about. I love that cliff wall. Very nice use of the skull pieces and train bits!

BrickNerd responds to us with Live Build and Ice Bucket Challenge!

In response to my calling out of Tommy Williamson, from BrickNerd, he is streaming a live build followed by his response to the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. It’s starts at 12 noon PST, so check it out, along with the latest new Bricknerd episode!

Serigant Prototype

If this is a prototype, I’m really looking forward to the actual build! Quý Chau recently posted this incredibly emotive “Industrial Mech/Uunmanned Mobile Humanoid Weapon”. The clean lines, with just the right amount of mechanized bits showing through, this a classic-looking build. Oh, he says it sings too.

Blazing a trail across the Brick Sky

Tyler Sky has concocted the cutest little starfighter. I love the compact, nearly “chibi”, feel of this one. The tread-wrapped engines and transparent cockpit are just icing on the cake.

Taking the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge to the Adult Fans of LEGO world!

ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

As everyone who hasn’t been living under a rock knows, there is something about ALS and Ice Buckets making the rounds of the Internet. The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge is raising funds and increasing awareness of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) or Lou Gehrig’s disease, as it is sometimes known. I have had two family members succumb to ALS so today I took part in the challenge and I’m calling on my fellow LEGO enthusiasts to do the same! Specifically I’m calling out Tommy Williamson of BrickNerd, Guy Himber of Crazybricks and Sean Mayo who is just plain cool. Get your ice on!

EDIT: So far Tommy and Sean have responded!

A Typical Cottage

Giorgos Solomonidis calls this build “A Typical Cottage” but I think there are a number details that really make this stand out. I love the rickety look of the fences and the ramshackle aspect of the roof really catches the eye. The color palette was well-thought out and is colorful without being garish or too busy. The brick-built cows are a nice touch too!

Civitatem et Flammas

This portrait of Roman Emperor Nero by Mihai Marius Mihu is simply stunning. I love Mihai’s work and this definitely doesn’t disappoint! From the ruined and burnt bust to the city in flames…not to mention the laurel wreath that mirrors the flame motif…this creation is tied together incredibly well.
