Return of the Mon Calamari Cruiser

Once again, we find ourselves writing about an excellent LEGO diorama by swbuilds. And once again, it’s a Mon Calamari Cruiser full of life! After finishing the bridge, this build apparently followed close behind. But I’m not going to talk about Star Wars here. Instead I’m going to reference another space-faring LEGO theme: Life on Mars. For that is where all that glorious sand purple comes from! This is one of those colours with an extremely limited colour palette: only 18 designs, and six of those are minifigure parts. Fortunately, many of those other 12 parts were larger ones, so you can make them go a long way, as swbuilds does here. I’m particularly fond of the overturned pump from 7317 Aero Tube Hangar in the background!

Bridge the gap between original and sequel trilogies with this detailed Star Wars diorama

I said it in my review of LEGO’s microscale Home One, and I’ll say it again: one of my favourite Star Wars sets is 7754 Home One Mon Calamari Star Cruiser. Every now and then I’m reminded of it, and this time it’s swbuilds‘ turn to do so. As you might have guessed, this builder specialises in highly detailed Star Wars builds, with a bridge of one of the Mon Cala species’ flagship cruisers. But not (necessarily) Home One! Even though we can spot Admiral Ackbar, Leia, Nien Nunb and Lando Calrissian all gathered around the table, swbuilds states that this is layout draws more from the sequel trilogy than their original appearance in Return of the Jedi. Either way: we love it!

Most Star Wars fans know about the iconic X-Wing fighter made famous by Luke Skywalker’s trench run during the attack on the Death Star, but did you know about the sleek predecessor, the Z-95 Headhunter? swbuilds, who specializes in amazing LEGO Star Wars vehicles that are quite detailed, has turned their impressive skills to build this lesser-known starfighter in LEGO. The techniques used to craft the wings and fuselage with almost seamless connections is, to quote Darth Vader, “Impressive, most impressive.”
