The majesty of a magpie magnified

Lee Nuo is a self-proclaimed bird enthusiast, and we’ve covered some of their avian builds before. But this tribute to the Formosan Blue Magpie takes things to a new heights, putting the bird at the certain of a vignette about the natural sciences and those who study them. We love the stylized magnifying glass and it’s POV into the smaller world, along with the scaffolding and the research team. It all serves as a reminder that sometimes the most beautiful things about nature are the things you can’t see with the naked eye.

Massive dragon and tiger pagodas stand over 2 1/2 feet tall!

Lee Nuo has graced us with a pair of pretty pagodas modeled entirely in LEGO! These very real (and very visit-able) pagodas in Kaohsiung, Taiwan are equal parts elegant and exciting with mythical animal-shaped tunnel entrances into each building. The animal theming continues up to the first roof of each tower, with miniature versions of their respective creatures decorating the railing. The big dragon – eating some tourists – has a perfectly modeled fringe made of blue flames and Hero Factory lightning bolts. If you like pagodas, there’s more in our archives, as well as more great tigers and dragons (including a certain recent Build-of-the-Year!) I’ve certainly found Lee’s build inspiring and I’d love to go visit some day. If you went, which animal would you prefer to be eaten by?

LEGO turkey is hot to trot this Thanksgiving

Today many of our American readers are no doubt sitting around a table with friends, loved ones, and that one annoying uncle, looking for ways to avoid talking about politics or football before carving into that centerpiece bird. Not this turkey! LEGO builder Lee Nuo presents the one that got away. With this gobbler on the lam, it means more room for dressing, yams, Brussels sprouts, or an extra slice of pie!

Toucan play that game.

A childhood spent watching sugary cereal commercials has conditioned me to believe that toucan beaks are some sort of highly advanced, fruit-detecting radar system. If that’s not true, don’t tell me. I’d rather not know. Regardless, Lee Nuo’s take on the keel-billed variety of toucan has got enough bright colors to give me some serious Saturday morning flashbacks. And they’re all pretty spot-on accurate to the real thing; from the lime green bill to the medium blue legs and toes (which make clever use of some minifigure hands). It all pops brilliantly against the body, made mostly from black Technic panels.
