LEGO 40701 Ballerina & Nutcracker Scene Gift with Purchase [Review]

The internet can argue for ages about what the best Christmas song is. And while there are some correct answers (it’s the Pogues, obviously), one which should not be overlooked is Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite. This was Christmas music before Christmas music was a thing, and has been set to many a festive ballet performance since. You might find yourself humming it if you build LEGO’s next Gift with Purchase (GWP) offering: 40701 Ballerina & Nutcracker Scene, which will be available from December 6 to December 31 with purchases of US $TBD | CAN $TBD | UK £TBD. (You might also find it at third-party retail sites like eBay or Amazon.) I think it’s preferable to having Mariah Carey stuck in your head, anyway – so let’s take a closer look at this holiday-themed set!

LEGO 40702 Christmas Picture Frame Gift with Purchase [Review]

The holiday season is all about gifts, right? Well no, it’s probably got more to do with family, friends and a great big roast dinner. But gifts have become an inescapable part of Christmas. And if you’re doing some LEGO gift shopping from December 13 until December 31, you might get a little gift of your own! There are two Gifts with Purchase (GWPs) being offered in that timeframe, the smallest of which is 40702 Christmas Picture Frame. This set will be available with purchases exceeding… Well, we don’t have that information yet, so the prices are US $TBD | CAN $TBD | UK £TBD! We’ll update that when it’s available, of course – you might also find it from third-party sellers like eBay or Amazon. In the meantime let’s take a closer look at this festive frame.

The LEGO Group provided The Brothers Brick with an early copy of this set for review. Providing TBB with products for review guarantees neither coverage nor positive reviews.

Adventures in Gingerbread City

I know we haven’t hit Halloween yet, but when someone decides to mix a Christmas classic with an existing LEGO theme, it tends to stand out regardless of the time of year. Displaying the Modular theme in cookie form, poMOCník & dirigent provides a lovely row of townhouses baked with plenty of spice and architectural forms. With so many great techniques on display, my favorite has got to be the columns of minifigure legs used to bend the front wall out under the balcony.

LEGO unveils 2024’s Winter Village Collection set as LEGO Icons 10339 Santa’s Post Office [News]

LEGO continues to expand its beloved Winter Village Collection with two exciting new additions this year: LEGO Icons 10339 Santa’s Post Office and LEGO 40746 Santa’s Delivery Truck. The sets are comprised of 1440 pieces and 224 pieces, respectively, depicting Santa and his elves hard at work delivering letters via truck and hot air balloon to the North Pole. Fans can look forward to adding these festive pieces to their holiday scenes starting October 1 for Insiders (Oct 4th for everyone else), alongside LEGO Icons 10325 Alpine Lodge and LEGO Icons 10308 Holiday Main Street from years past.

Midnight sweet train brings holiday cheer in LEGO

It’s not even Halloween, but some folk are already pining for a winter wonderland. Christmas comes early in LEGO courtesy of Eann McCurdy (Miscellanabuilds) whose delightful midnight train scene is both cozy and clever in design. As his eighth and final entry in the latest Iron Builder competition against Geneva D, Eann incorporates the required red cauldron in the engine’s boiler. The pileup of snow in front of the train is a perfect mix of parts, including ice cream, hoods, and a frog. I especially love the forced perspective created by snow-capped trees at two scales. A tiny red byplane appears in the background, referencing Geneva’s prior Red Baron entry.

Midnight Train

As if the brilliant train weren’t a grand enough finale, Eann prints the scene as a postcard for a bonus build that amps up the holiday spirit. Candles, Chrismas lights, and candies show off an abundance of red cauldrons. Dr. Strange capes make a sweet appearance as candy wrappers. Decorated gingerbread is the icing on the cake cookies.

A LEGO build on-theme for the present holiday

Trying to recreate fabric using LEGO bricks has always been a difficult feat for me. So many ideas have been left on the backburner because I couldn’t figure out how to work out a cape on a character build. But when it came to making a bow, as in the bundle of ribbon topping a present, I knew there had to be a better way to achieve the look without resorting to specialized pieces with a reduction in scale or simple curved slopes with no volume. Last year, I cracked the code on the bow of my dreams. But it wasn’t until this Christmas season that I was able to fully realize my vision of a perfect present. It’s helped quite a bit to have increased availability of the 2×2 inverted curved slope, plus enough time to engineer a box with a half-plate of “ribbon” running down each side.

Present 2.0

From everyone here at The Brothers Brick, we hope you have a merry and safe Christmas with plenty of LEGO sets under the tree!
