Iced brickaccino for, uh, Jeff Vader?

Here’s a fun bit of AFOL lore for you, readers. One of my very first interactions with the online LEGO community – and indeed YouTube – was a brick-film of Suzy Eddie Izzard’s famous Death Star Canteen sketch. (It’s still online to this day, and having looked at the upload date I now feel terribly old.) I have to wonder if that might have formed the inspiration for Kelly Bartlett‘s fantastic Death Star cafeteria! It’s part of a collaborative display at this week’s Bricks Cascade event in Portland, OR: the Death Star Village. As the name suggests, it’s all the Death Star amenities we never got to see in the films. And Kelly has shown she has a knack for brand marketing… I mean come on, Death Starbucks?! It’s almost meant to be!

What immediately jumps out about this build is how Kelly has absolutely nailed the decor. And not only that, but it’s a perfect match for both the Death Star – with its greyscale colour palette – and Starbucks cafes the world over, with those tiles extending vertically from floor and ceiling.

Some custom decals further sell the illusion. You may have seen the brilliant Darth Vader-ised logo in the picture above, but my favourite detail is this familiar sight of a student working away over a coffee. I got a good laugh over their study material!

In fact, speaking of Darth Vader… Is this where the name Jeff Vader came from? If coffee shops are known for one thing, it’s the poor baristas mishearing customers’ names. I hope for this IG droid’s sake that its auditory receptors are working well. If you upset the wrong customer you might find your neck being hacked at with the thin bit of a tray until – well, you get the idea.

If you’re one of many headed to Bricks Cascade this weekend, then you’ll be able to pore over the details of this build in person- and all its fellow Death Star Village builds!
