This LEGO microscale city is guarded by the power of arts and crafts

Among many other things, Athena is the patron Greek goddess of handicrafts. That makes Loic Gilbert‘s microscale LEGO statue the perfect tribute to her! It would be a fine figure taken on its own; add some colour and you have a flesh-and-blood Athena. But with that monochrome palette, and in the context of a well-crafted microscale settlement, it becomes absolutely massive! She’s a good choice of guardian too, seeing as one of her other patronages is warfare. Do gods and goddesses get to choose their patronages? Those two make an odd mix on the face of it. Maybe after a long day of warmongering, sitting down with some knitting or a LEGO set is the perfect way to unwind. Seeing as Athena is also the goddess of wisdom, I won’t question it.

The blue screen of life

In the bowels of a dreary-looking office building, life shines in the intriguing “Blue Screen” by Loïc Gilbert. Let’s let the builder tell the story behind this LEGO enigma:

The building had stood abandoned since 1992. …fluorescent lights flickered to life, joined by the faint whirring of old desktop fans. Then came the soft, steady drip of water. He glanced at the dim blue glow coming from an old monitor, but something felt off. The desktop wallpaper wasn’t static—it was gently rippling.

Blue Screen

The mystery of the computer screen aside, my favorite aspect of the build is the way every mundane detail is brought to life with ordinary LEGO elements: the post-it note the mouse, the scissors, the ranks of tiles archived away in crates. I’m pretty sure I had that exact computer sitting on my desk back in 2002. Mine never came to life with a mysterious blue screen, though.

Thriving LEGO plants and no water needed

LEGO builder Loïc Gilbert has created “Solarium,” where the plants take center stage in this creation. Hues of pink, purple, yellow, and bright green tell of a healthy greenhouse. Adding to the unique features of all this foliage, we see swords, hats, and even a hairpiece put to good use. Another highlight is the floor, which features a patterned carpet crafted from LEGO “cheese slopes”, adding further intricacy to the overall design. These plants would fit perfectly alongside LEGO Icons Botanical Collection 10329 Tiny Plants for sure!
