These chibi builds are Golden

It’s hard to escape the juggernaut that is K-Pop Demon Hunters. The movie just broke another record, holding for its 15th week in Netflix’s Top 10. It’s such a phenomenon, in fact, that I wouldn’t bet against LEGO producing some official sets someday. But, until then, we’ll settle for LegoWyrm’s take on Zoey, Ruma, and Mira. The characters are brought to life in a chibi form that’s a perfect compliment to the film’s tone, with plenty of great technique on display. I love the studs not on top construction of the trio’s eyes. And the way the printed design on Zoey’s pants is brick-built strikes a perfect chord.

An icy dragon puts a wintry chill on a summer build

Upon first examination of the colors of this frosty LEGO castle by Olle Moquist, I spotted something buried under the snow and ice…a raised baseplate! Olle does a great job of seamlessly incorporating this raised baseplate in the build. From there, I climbed the steps to a beautiful brick-built, wooden door under the watchful eye of the wyrm.

The raised baseplate has become a piece of the past. These vacuum-formed bases peaked in the ’90s with 31 different raised baseplates being used across many sets, but we haven’t seen a raised baseplate in over a decade. Olle’s brings this chilly baseplate from 2002 and 2006’s Belville sets, warming our hearts with nostalgia for the old ways.

When LEGO introduced a new scale of buildable figures for characters like Wednesday Addams, the sets introduced interchangeable printed faces with big eyes. As builder lavishlump points out, these faces are quite similar to the ones used for the popular Japanese Nendororoid figures and work great for LEGO anime characters too. Lavishlump used the Glinda face for a model of Alice Margatroid, a magical puppeteer from a Japanese PC game.

LegoWyrm uses the same techniques for a very different video game Alice – the heroine of American McGee’s Alice. Wednesday’s goth expression is a perfect match for this dark spin on Wonderland.

Time will tell if LEGO continues to release buildable figures at this scale and expand the face options for anime fans, but for now it’s great to see a specialized part spur creativity in the community.
