SHIPtember is an annual AFOL tradition where space builders challenge themselves to create a spacecraft that’s at least 100 studs long, built entirely during September. “SHIP” refers both to spaceship but is also an acronym for “Seriously Huge Investment in Parts.” Simon Liu helped start the trend 12 years ago, and for LEGO space fans, it’s a highlight of the year. Scott Wilhelm is one of the original participants and an event regular. But Scott’s love of SHIPs is too great to contain to just one month. At Brickworld, Scott debuted the Noctem Æternus, a dark blue behemoth measuring 105 studs long.
Scott is always a master of color blocking, here seamlessly adding brown striping. Viewed from the side, the ship evokes OG Star Wars designs with a heavily greebled layer between the slicker hulls. The wedge-shaped stern reveals some impressive engines.
As the Noctem Æternus was built before September, it won’t count towards SHIPtember. Part of the joy of this event is seeing the WIPs of new vessel. Here Scott shares a timelapse from last year’s build (which we blogged last year).
While Scott hasn’t participated in every SHIPtember, his off-month SHIPs have more than made up for the few he missed. Scott’s armada is remarkable for the range in shapes, colors, and themes that he brings to the challenge on top of the endurance necessary to keep up the pace year after year.
Look forward to more SHIPtember coverage from The Brothers Brick over the coming month. Reach out if you’d like to share your build or talk about your process.
