May the 4th – TBB’s Top Ten LEGO X-Wing MOCs [Feature]

In celebration of May the 4th, we’ve scoured our Jedi archives to appreciate the hundreds of Star Wars fan models featured on this site over the years. On the cusp of our 20th anniversary, those archives run deep. (You heard that right. If the Battle of Yavin was happening right now, The Brothers Brick would have been founded right around the time Senator Palpatine was kidnapped by General Grievous!) There is one Star Wars vehicle that has been recreated and shared by adult fans of LEGO more than any other – the X-Wing Fighter. Just as each Jedi must construct their own lightsaber, creating an original X-Wing design is almost like a rite of passage for builders. Here are 10 of our favorite designs from builders who regular readers of the site will definitely recognize. We even have free instructions for the design featured in the cover.

Joel Short debuted this take on the X-Wing exactly one year ago for Star Wars Day 2024. The builder painstakingly matched cockpit shaping, color blocking, and greebling to on-screen references. At the time, we called it the most Screen-accurate minifig scale X-Wing to date.

Tom Loftus (aka Inthert) is a master at working with shapes and colors for distinctive spaceship designs. His compact X-Wing upholds that legacy and still looks great 4 years later. Here’s what we had to say back in 2021. Tom was generous enough to share free instructions for this amazing X-Wing model, which you can download here.

Jared Reisweber always goes big! This coffee-table sized version of the X-Wing contains as many pieces as the UCS Millennium Falcon! Here’s what we had to say when we first saw this beast back in  2021.

In recent years, Jarek Książczyk has been focusing on weirder and darker sci-fi creations, but over the years he’s put out some incredible Star Wars vehicles too, including what many consider the gold-standard X-Wing MOC. This pic is from the builder’s 2022 update. Here’s what we had to say about the model in 2018.

Maciej Szymański mostly builds real world vehicles, but he made an exception for the X-Wing. You can read our comments from back in 2016 here. Since then, the builder has updated with an even slicker design.

Mike Psiaki is another builder specializing in real world vehicles who also couldn’t resist the allure of the X-Wing design. Here’s what we had to say back in 2011.

Zane Houston has been creating some out-of-this-world mech designs recently, but all the way back in 2011 he put his mark on the iconic X-Wing with a militarized design influenced by modern fighter jegs. Here’s what we said back in the day.

Hannes Tscharner (aka Marshall Banana) most recently coordinated the jaw-dropping Rogue Ronin collab, but this LUG legend also made a memorable version of the X-Wing. Here are our comments from back in 2010.

No Star Wars builder has been as featured here as Tim Goddard, and yet somehow we missed covering his signature attempt at the iconic X-Wing from back in 2010, seen here. We did however cover his 2017 midi-scale versions that came out in celebration of Rogue One.

Our very first X-Wing features were from a “X-Wing Evolved” contest put on by the venerable From Bricks to Bothans community. We especially liked this take from the late LEGO legend Natennen” Nielson, which has one of the distinctive silhouettes the builder is known for. Here’s our coverage from way back in 2007.

We hope you enjoyed this tour of X-WING mocs over the years. Putting together this list was a reminder of both builders that we’ve lost and builders who continue to grow and share after two decades. It’s fascinating to see how design trends change over time and how how changes in the available bricks influence the destails of such a familiar ship. Which model would you most like to pilot on a trench run?
