LEGO Wednesday 76780 Wednesday Addams Figure – Spooky or Spectacular? [Review]

Ever since the premiere of the critically acclaimed Wednesday series on Netflix in November 2022, directed by Tim Burton, many LEGO fans have eagerly anticipated getting their hands on official sets. With the second season currently in production, the wait is finally over. The first of these sets getting a TBB review, LEGO Wednesday 76780 Wednesday Addams Figure, features a brick-built figure of the protagonist, which comes with two outfits from the show. The set comes with 702 pieces and will be available on October 1st for US $49.99 | CAN $64.99 | UK £44.99 and may also be found at third-party retailers like Amazon or eBay.

The LEGO Group provided The Brothers Brick with an early copy of this set for review. Providing TBB with products for review guarantees neither coverage nor positive reviews.

Unboxing the parts, instructions, and stickers

LEGO Wednesday 76780 Wednesday Addams Figure comes in a medium-sized square box. The front of the box shows the completed set and the Wednesday show branding. There is a photo of Jenna Ortega (who plays Wednesday) in one corner and an inset of the alternate outfit and hair from the Rave’N ball. On the back of the box, there is an image of each version of Wednesday shown side-by-side and a small row of images showing close-ups of some of the details, along with an image of the two side drawers where you can store the elements from the alternate build.

Inside the box, there are 7 paper parts bags of various sizes, an instruction booklet, and a small sticker sheet.

The build

The build starts with the typewriter and crystal ball mini-builds. Thing is also included, and he is a new custom mold with stitches printing and a molded hand that fits on a stud, a minifigure hand, or a mini-doll hand.

Next, we have a basic frame for the base of the display. Two side openings will hold the sliding drawers used to store extra elements once finished. There is a single Technic pinhole for the simple mechanism used to “unlock” the drawers.

With the lower base done for now, we start to fill in details on top, including the attachment points for the sides of the stone gate entrance to Nevermore Academy. There is a small rock with a gray skull, a sand-blue section for Wednesday to stand, and the base for the headstone of her dear departed pet scorpion Nero. Several candles are added for the perfect mood.

Two small drawers adorned with black roses slide smoothly into place, resting on top of long rail plates. The drawers are locked into place with a simple round knob with an axle that slides into the holes in the Technic beams of the drawers.

With the base complete we move on to the two angled stone walls, which, along with the black iron gate details represent the opening sequence of the show’s intro. The pillars attach using a modified plate with an underside bar for added stability. The iron gate details are made with several black elements including hot dogs and hockey sticks. A single blackbird (not a raven, unfortunately) sits atop each pillar.

At this point, a choice is needed, as to which version of Wednesday to build first. Since I wanted to display everyday Wednesday, I built Rave’N Dance Wednesday first. While there are two versions of Wednesday’s face elements, many of the same parts are used in different ways, preventing both versions from being built with a single set (a small number of fairly common parts could allow you to have both versions built simultaneously).

The body is simple: a small core with a ball socket for the head and clips for the arms to attach. A single axle extends downward and a Technic ring with the legs attached with bars allows the feet to swivel side-to-side.

When I first saw the box, I thought that the hands were made using a new hand part like Thing attached to an existing part for the forearm, and this was the cause of my only complaint (more of a disappointment really) that the wrist does not turn but is part of a single molded element. This has only a minimal impact on the figure’s pose-ability, and since the minidoll does not have wrist movement either I should not have expected this.

Before we finish the outfit, Wednesday’s head is next. This has a central core with a ball on the end of a bar for the neck and lots of fun details for the hair. One thing to point out is that the head proportions are a bit off since it neither matches the longer minidoll heads nor the more rounded minifigure heads. The overall effect is a closer match to many 5-8” dolls. With the head complete, it is time to move on to Wednesday’s vintage black dress.

The dress is made up of 8 separate sections that attach to the bars of the octagon element of Wednesday’s torso. She then stands at the center of the base.

Everyday Wednesday comes with long black sleeves and a sticker for the torso and skirt, which uses a new large cone-shaped element, and of course, her long braids. Both outfits include her iconic large black boots.

The finished model

The finished model makes a great display scene, showcasing not only the figure but a collection of accessories that perfectly capture Wednesday Addams’ dark and pensive personality. The two faces are nearly identical, with the Rave’N dance version sporting more eyeliner and darker lipstick. The arms are the most poseable feature, but the head has a good range of motion as well.

Conclusions and recommendations

This being the second LEGO set to include buildable figures closer to the minidoll proportions, I think LEGO has really come up with something special here. The potential for new figures based on existing licenses is broad, and the concept of a detailed display scene of your favorite Disney Princess, for example, may appeal to a wider audience. That said, if you are a fan of the show, or of the character, I would highly recommend considering this set as an excellent addition to any display. The build process was fun with some new building techniques and some great parts like transparent dark leaves and black roses, in addition to the new printed face elements that could allow you to build your own characters.
