Our favorite holiday tradition is opening all six LEGO Advent Calendars, one day at a time, with you, our readers! Along with spoiler pics of the daily gifts, we include commentary and alternate builds to celebrate the season and creativity.
We have an all-star cast of custom minifig creators leading our Advent adventure this year. Fool’s Figures is wizarding his way through Harry Potter and Frozen calendars. ExpansionBricks is launching Star Wars and Friends. And beyondb0nes is digging into Minecraft and City. Now let’s open some doors and see what gifts are in store for today!
Fools: The iconic Skele-gro bottle, perhaps the most easily identifiable potion in the whole Wizarding World, even if it hadn’t include this printed cylinder piece.
Expansion: What happens if you drink all 1100 drops of Skelle-gro… Double skeleton??
Bones: As the resident bones expert, I nominate myself to try.
Jake: At this scale, I can’t help but see a bottle of white out.
Fools: Another set of houses to add to your display. These ones aren’t too remarkable but it also includes this small gemstone piece. I’m not too sure what this is supposed to represent.
Jake: I think it represents the sad tear of the child unlucky enough to only have this weak calendar.
Expansion: I’m just going to say it – I quite like the tiny houses. Looking forward to seeing them all lined up. But no windows… that’s nightmare fuel!
Fools: For today’s alt-build, yes I want to build a snowman.
Bones: Not the most exciting microscale of the calendar, but it’s a classic: a little truck in LEGO colors (or ketchup with fry colors, depending on your perspective). Maybe a nod to last year’s Delivery Truck 60440?
Fools: The LEGO truck! For some reason this is super nostalgic to me. A set I always wanted as a kid but could never find anywhere was the LEGO Truck. All the mini sets were so cool to me.
Bones: Another microscale house, like Day 11, but even better this time. The use of bracket 41682 and two transparent plates is incredibly effective for representing windows at such a tiny scale. Adorable.
Expansion: This house is my favourite micro build yet. I think every Minecraft player has built something like this on their first night.
Jake: Neither Creepers, nor Endermen nor gloom of night will keep LEGO trucks from delivering their goods!
Bones: The crazy mannequin, sent straight to the battlefield with its terrifying delayed-confetti gifts!
Expansion: We just keep getting beds in this advent calendar! The good thing is that since it always comes with a minidoll, it’s all good. Is that a controller on the pajamas? Or a blob? I’m going to call it the blob with a hat.
Fools: I hadn’t thought about it up until this point, but it is really nice that each minidoll comes with a sleeping bag in the same day. In most other calendars you’d only be getting the figure.
Expansion: Another box of droid parts, this time with only a head?! Combining this with some previous days allows you to build a 2nd B1 battle droid, but spreading a battle droid (famously the cheapest of all Lego Star Wars figs) across multiple days is NOT what I call good value. Also the various spray paint cans on the bottom is another missed recolour opportunity 1/5
Fools: Do B1 battle droids have an AI developed enough to paint? Judging by the movies, I doubt it!
Expansion: Here are the two droids I mentioned. With no Jedi in sight, this advent calendar is a paradise for them and so they’ve treated themselves to some hot chocolate “I have no mouth but I must drink.”
Fools: Nothing beats a good hot chocolate after a victory against the Republic.
