LEGO Collectible Minifigures Series 28 Review: We built a zoo [Review]

Animal mascots have been a staple of the Collectible Minifig line going back to Gorilla Suit Guy in series 3. Love ’em or hate ’em, animal mascots have continued to push the envelope for whimsical designs with bold custom headpiece molds, a range of tails, and even fins and wings as alternatives to minifig arms. For CMF series 28, LEGO is going all in on animals with a menagerie of minifigures guaranteed to bring a smile to your face. You can collect them all starting January 1. Not sure if these collectible critters are for you? Our full review follows.

Collectible Minifigures Series 28: Animals | Available January 1, 2026| US $4.99 | CAN $5.99 | UK £3.49

Monkey: The monkey costume comes with a new dual-molded helmet, a brown monkey tail in a new recolor, and a banana accessory. For this series, all of the stan stands are bright green. Our Monkey mascot’s accessory, while appropriate, is a bit of a disappointment, being such a common element, and if you collect Monkey Kid sets, the tail piece will be quite familiar.

The dual-sided head features a cheeky tongue-out face on one side and a gap-toothed smile with a band aid on the cheek on the other. This figure is one of the more plain figures printing wise, but the fun monkey headpiece makes up for the lack of detail.

Lion: The lion comes with a new dual molded helmet, a brand new printed tail, and a chicken leg piece. Again, the accessory is a common piece, but with a headpiece and tail this impressive, we’ll forgive it.

I love how expressive the head print is for this figure, and how unique the new molded parts are. I can already see the custom lion knights and sports mascots waiting to happen!

Goldfish: The fish costume, one of my favorites, comes with a new dual molded helmet as well as molded fish fins in a new recolor. The figure uses short legs, with printing.

This is such a cute and funny figure, the gold scale print really ties it together, and any fish food accessory is sure to be a welcomed sight for MOC decorators.

Dolphin: The dolphin costume comes with a new dolphin helmet/tail piece and recolored fins to match. She’s a perfect companion to the Left Shark fig that debuted arm fins back in Series 15.

Not too much to say about this figure, but the clam and gem stone pieces are good simple side accessories.

Peacock: The peacock comes with a brand new addition to the bird helmet molds, a recolor of the turkey feathers and a nice sunflower build. I can see this figure being used to make custom Carnivale or dancer figures.

While the facial expressions aren’t as exciting as some of the others in the series, the dual-molded legs are a great addition, and as the feet match minifig yellow, they can function as teal shorts in any context.

Frog: The frog comes with a fantastic new frog helmet mold, printed freckles arms and dual-molded legs, and a fun bubble kit.

I can tell this figure is going to be a fan favorite, and for good reason. The detail and creativity really make the frog costume shine, and make the printing in the rest of the series lacking in comparison.

It even comes with extra pieces to blow bubbles with a friend!

Dalmatian: The dalmatian costume comes with full body printing, a brand new molded helmet, new white tail recolor, and a printed frisbee accessory to play with.

The panting and sweating face option is fantastic. Another example of a fantastic CMF series fig, great and creative printing from head to toe.

Fluffy Cat: The cat costume comes with a new helmet mold and new white fluffy tail recolor.

This is probably the weakest figure in the series with a standard build and single yarn ball accessory. A more creative cat toy would  have helped make up for the lack of printing.

Koala: The koala costume comes with a cute new koala helmet mold, a leaf bundle, and a regionally appropriate boomerang.

A sleep mask face option is fun, if a bit unusual with the printed text. Toe printing on this short-legged figure could’ve taken it a bit further detail wise, but a good CMF figure all around.

Parrot: The parrot comes with a new dual molded helmet, dual-molded legs, TWO brand new tail feather waist cape pieces, red printed parrot wings, and a nice printed parrot snack brick.

Another great detailed figure. The double cloth addition for the tail feathers is such a nice touch and great for custom figure creations!

Gator: The gator costume comes with dual molded helmet/tail, a rubber ducky, and a dual molded life preserver floaty in trans pink and white. Legs are printed on the toes and knees.

This figure is very reminiscent of the old lizard costume CMF, which is a very nice blast from the past. The life preserver is such a cool piece to have as well! It’s an amazing upgrade to the toilet seat/flotation ring that’s been used since 1999 and no doubt a piece we’ll be seeing a lot more of. with The croc’s two accessories can’t help but call attention to some of the others figs less-inspired accompaniments.

Cute Bunny: The bunny costume comes with a new rabbit helmet that is more animal-like than the previous rabbit hood and stands on short legs. For accessories, there’s a nice new printed egg and a basket to carry it.

With a the printed egg, the Easter essence is strong with this bunny.

Final Thoughts

This is a very solid series, despite the lack of variety, and would make a perfect little gift or Easter basket stuffer for friends or kids. With every figures containing a new headpiece mold, you’re guaranteed to get a new element for your collection. And with the fun bursts of color and a wide variety of animals from all over the world, there’s sure to be something for everyone!

Builders who prefer adventure-focused themes like castle and space might think there’s no room for cute animals in their collection, but I for one am excited to see how these parts can be used in different fantasy contexts. Over the next few weeks, I’ll be sharing custom minifigs based on all 12  CMF figures. Here’s a taste  of what to expect!

Super Hero customs! Just replace the yellow heads with flesh tone heads!

Captain Peacock! (I knew when I first saw it that the turkey tailpiece would someday be repurposed for a peacock suit.)

Frog Man! (Maybe also add a green utility belt?)

    The Scarlet Macaw!

    Human Goldfish!

    Lion Man! And Kitten!

    Koala Kid!

    Monkey Men!

    Blue Dolphin!

    Dalmatian 101!

    Rapid Rabbit!

Captain Croco . . Nah, too obvious.

My only gripes are the lack of back printing on some of the figures (which always looks kind of cheap, with not even a couple of black lines) and the lack of paw prints on the
    Cat, Dalmatian, Koala and Bunny.

Otherwise, this looks like a fun set!
