Dancing with dragons and thrones in LEGO

RebelLUG member Kaleb (llego_pig) returns to the Seven Kingdoms with the latest in a series of masterful medieval builds that capture the specificity of George R. R. Martin’s world like few builders can. This time Kaleb’s subject is the Merman’s Court, where Davos Seaworth meets with Wyman Manderly, Lord of the White Harbor. Take a moment to appreciate the murals that adorn the walls. Ornate mosaics have become a fixture in Castle builds, but usually to create geometric patterns. I’m in awe of the way Kaleb weaves a Kraken fighting a whale, kelp, and an undulating tide into the brickwork with minimal gaps. The floor, too, reminiscent of a seabed, is equally impressive.

Kaleb’s past LEGO tributes to Westeros landmarks have been impressive, and even grander in scale. Build in 2022, here is Kaleb’s take on Deepwood Motte. Theon Greyjoy might have called it a “wooden pisspot on a hill,” but it’s quite majestic in brick with excellent SNOT walls of wood-colored plates. The builder added a weirwood tree to make enhance the connection to A Song of Ice and Fire.

In 2021, for his first ASoIaF build, Kaleb recreated a section of Castle Black and the Wall, recreating Mance Rayder’s attack in season 4 of the HBO show. The builder uses another SNOT technique for this castle, studs facing out for a more rough-hewn appearance.

Kaleb’s largest build to date, 2 years in the making, remains this stunning section of the Red Keep. Originally, the builder started with the harbor that was meant to depict Lannisport, but midway through, Kaleb swapped white walls with dark nougat for the Red Keep and the results are stunning. The post calls this “Part 1” of a fuller keep at minifig scale. Here’s hoping we’ll see more in the future! We wrote about this build back when it debuted in 2023.

To appreciate how the build evolved, here is the same port with the white walls of Lannisport. (Mostly white! I love the inclusion of yellowed old bricks around the base).

Kaleb also created tributes to series beyond the Game of Thrones saga. Here the builder dances with Arrax from House of the Dragon, demonstrating skill at brick-built beasts to match the talent for castles.

Finally, with a new HBO adaptation coming to TV screens soon, here is Kaleb’s take on Dunk and Egg and the cast of The Hedge Knight. The builder has many more purist minifig versions of the ASoIaF characters that you can explore on Kaleb’s account here.
