Hey you guys! LEGO reveals 21363 The Goonies, complete with 12 minifigures and lots of booty traps [News]

Goonies never say die. Especially when there’s still a chance for a comeback in LEGO form! Available on November 1, LEGO Ideas 21363 The Goonies turns the beloved ’80s classic adventure film into an elaborate 18+ playset based on a fan design from Vaggelis Ntezes. One side of the model shows One-Eyed Willie’s pirate ship, while the other retells the story of the film as a series of connected vignettes. The set contains a whopping 12 minifigures, including the ensemble of teen actors who would go on to star in films like Lord of the Rings, Avengers: Endgame, Everything Everywhere All at Once, and Tales from the Crypt Presents: Bordello of Blood. We love the film, but as Cyndi Lauper asks, is R the Goonies good enough? Have a look at the official reveal and read our thoughts from seeing the set in Billund last month.

The Goonies marks the third Pirate IP to come to LEGO in 2025, following One Piece and Pirates of the Caribbean. Size-wise, The Goonies is roughly the same length as The Baratie and the Black Pearl, but the Black Pearl is significantly taller with its keel and masts. Aesthetically, the pirate ship facade of The Goonies leaves much to be desired, especially the truncated prow and diminished masts and sails. Referencing a deleted scene from the film, an octopus peeks out of the water at the ship’s stern.

For reference, here’s the life-size prop version from the film.

Where the set shines is in the storytelling found on the back. Rather than recreate a ship interior, the facade hides a series of rooms that recount the film’s story sequentially, starting from the Fratellis’ hideout in the top left and advancing through caverns and past traps to finally reach Willy’s treasure in the final room.

The official set, while smaller than the winning fan submission, actually has one additional room – One Eyed Willy’s treasure room – as the LEGO designers explain it wouldn’t be right to have a treasure hunting adventure without including the treasure. On the one hand, it’s impressive how many moments are captured in the relatively compact display. On the other, each room is so tiny, there’s not much visual detail and the atmosphere in the fan model doesn’t carry through. What does deliver is the functionality, especially the floor that crumbles underneath the organ when you press the wrong key. It’s joyful to play with.

The other area where the set excels is the minifigures. The set includes Francis, Jake, and Mama Fratelli, Sloth, Brandon, One-eyed Willy, Mouth, Mikey, Data, Chunk, Andy, and Stef, with every character having a unique torso printing, three characters featuring new hair/hat molds, and two characters with printed legs. The Minifig count goes up if you include the GWP available at launch, which includes Mikey and Brandon’s parents (no exclusive minifig elements). As it’s unlikely we’ll see another Goonies set anytime soon, it’s great that LEGO included pretty much the full cast, and as the designers are quite versatie, the parts will likely prove quite popular with custom fig creators.

Overall, after previewing the set, we found a a lot to like about the clever design, even if the aesthetics aren’t likely to win over non fans of the film.

Here’s what LEGO has to say about the set:

“Hey, you guys!” Relive The Goonies movie adventure with this collectible LEGO® Ideas set for adults (21363). This diorama model features brick-built vignettes of iconic scenes from the 1980s cult classic movie, from the Fratellis’ hideaway and caves to Willy’s treasure room. Turn the model around to view a detailed recreation of the exterior of the Inferno pirate ship ruins. The set includes 12 LEGO minifigures of key characters from the movie and the interiors are packed with authentic details. Send a minifigure through the secret fireplace entrance to the caves. Activate the boulder-dropping trap. Use the Copper Bones Skeleton Key to release the trapdoor. Push the keys on the skeleton organ to break the floor and access the slide to the octopus (from a deleted scene). Send Sloth sliding down the mast on the Inferno deck. A fantastic movie lover gift, this pirate ship-shaped model makes striking home decor. Set contains 2,912 pieces.
