Welcome to Heroes of Fur and Feather: A “Dungeon Crossing” role-play adventure in LEGO! On Monday we put out a call for heroes and already many have answered the call. Today we’ll meet our main heroes and learn what happens on Delving Day. Today’s story ends with a challenge for our featured heroes as well as anyone who wants to play along. It’s not too late to create your own animal hero and participate in weekly challenges for the chance to win Animal Crossing LEGO sets. Share your character and challenges on Flickr or Instagram and tag it #HeroesOfFurAndFeather . Now on to the story!
Meet the Heroes of Fur and Feather
Grab a pillow, pour yourself a nice cup of tea, and settle in for a super COZY adventure! That’s right, today is Delving Day! I’ll be your Lore Master for this adventure, but you can call me Lomi. Please? It’s really cute, right?
Oh… but this isn’t about me. This adventure is about the young heroes of the Valley who have travelled all the way to Dungeon Crossing to make their first delve. Heroes like…
Olly Elderquill, the Hedgehog Bard!
“Olly Elderquill walked with deliberate steps, despite his nerves.
Today marked the day of his first Delving, and like his litter-brothers before him, it was time to leave home.
Olly was the runt of the litter, but Hedge-Kin are of a kindly disposition with their own. Olly was allowed to wait an extra year after his name-day to go Delving.
With his trusty lute, passed down to him by his great-great-grandfather, he was ready to face the challenges of Dungeon Crossing, and begin his adventuring as a Bard of Elderquill Village!”
A runt with a lute. Wow! Talk about underleveled… Just kidding! I’m sure he’ll do great! But Olly wasn’t the only one with something to prove this Delving Day. Who’s this coming down the path? It’s…
Liri Treewhack, a growing Barbarian of the Smashing Squirrel tribe!
Liri Treewhack was born beneath the roots of stone and pine, the eldest sprout of five in a burrow that echoed with hammers. Raised in the clamor of mining tunnels, she learned early to silence her fears, to carry burdens without complaint, and to guide her siblings with steady paws.
But today, other responsibilities await her: Delving Day draws near. It is the passage into adulthood, a sacred rite among the Valley. And for Liri, who has always stood tall for others, it is more than tradition. It is a promise. She must shine, not for pride, but for the small eyes that watch her with hope.
Clutched in her paw is a relic of her bloodline: a hammer of wood and fruit shell, once wielded by the first miner of the Treewhack name. With it, she steps toward the unknown, toward Dungeon Crossing.
Firstborn bad-ass with a whacking stick. Whoa… OP much? Haha, it’s good. That just means I can turn up the difficulty a bit, heh heh… But first, who’s that coming down the forest path? Its–
Kitara the Fox Ranger (sub-class Beast Master)
Kitara was born into a reclusive forest family known for their ties to the Druidic circles, but she never fit their mold. She rejected their rituals, choosing action over ideology, claw over creed. To her, nature isn’t sacred—it’s alive, and it must be protected. She sees herself not as part of the forest, but as its guardian, its shield against those who would poison, twist, or burn it.
Disdaining the politics of the covens and the passivity of prayer, Kitara walks her own path. Her wolf pup—rescued from a razed den—is more than a symbol of that path; it’s her future partner in the fight to come. She is blunt, cunning, and fiercely independent, and while she comes to Dungeon Crossing alone, she does so with clear purpose.
Let others come seeking glory or destiny. Kitara has come to hunt what doesn’t belong.
A fox with a puppy? Is this a Goofy/Pluto thing? We’re doing that type of story then? Perfect! I love it!
Many other heroes continue to show up, but we’ll be focusing on the story of Olly, Liri, and Kitara.
The Delving Day Ceremony
The Valley is home to countless animal tribes of every stripe and plume. In ages past, the animals fought against each other like common beasts, but for generations the Valley has maintained peace thanks to the tradition that brings us here today: Delving Day.
When an animal comes of age, they travel here to Dungeon Crossing to make their Delve. Every animal, from the humblest cheesemaker to the big cheeses on their cheddar thrones make a Delve. The ritual binds all animals together in fellowship.
Everyone knows that before beginning a Delve, all would be heroes must first consult the Questing Beast to receive their questing quarry. But who… or what the Questing Beast is a mystery until your Delving Day arrives.
As Olly, Liri, and Kitara approach the Crossing, they are greeted by a somber figure dressed in striking scarlet robes. “Yes, yes. I am the Questing Beast, Tamouk. Today you Delve to prove your value to the Valley. You must be wondering what it is you seek in the Dungeon? Of course, I will tell you your questing quarry. But first…”
“It is traditional to make a tithing.” Tamouk finishes. From behind the Questing Beast emerge his twin Acolyes, Tinko and Tonko.
“A tithing…. Yes… a tithing…”
“The smallest offering is fine… Is fine…”
“But golden bells are preferred… are preferred….”
Liri steps up first. “Hazelnuts are precious in my tribe. Please accept these,” she says, dropping a handful of the valuable nuts.
Olly swallows his fear and steps up next. “I offer a feather for the sky, an acorn from the earth, and a golden bell in honor of the Questing Beast,” he says meekly. The acolytes nod in approval.
Kitara steps up last, digging into her satchel and finding only a few worthless bits and bobs. “I guess you can have these acorns.”
Tamouk frowns. “Perhaps you would prefer to make your tithing on credit?”
Kitara huffs and tosses in a single acorn.
Tamouk regains his composure. “The tithings are merely a fun tradition. They will not affect your chances of success,” Tamouk says gravely. “And as for your quarry, you may now spin the Wheel of Wonderous things.”
Tamouk reveals a golden wheel adorned with four symbols: Egg, Vegetable, Mineral, and Relic.
“The quarry the wheel gives you is yours alone to find. Once you have spun the wheel, you may begin your delve.”
Having made their tithings and their spins, Olly, Kitara, and Liri descend into the Dungeon…
This Week’s Challenge!
This week you are tasked with finding one of the questing quarries from the Wheel of Wonders – an Egg, a Vegetable, a mineral, or a relic. It doesn’t need to be literally the objects shown – just pick one of those categories and interpret as you will.
Some things you should know about the Dungeon…
- It’s not that scary (yet)! In fact, it’s pretty cozy! You might have been prepared for epic battles, but what you find is more of a walk in the park.
- The Dungeon is a diverse mix of biomes. While there are catacombs of stone and brick, there are also forests and swamps and libraries. Anything goes, really.
To compete in this week’s challenge, use the hero that you’ve created. If you haven’t made a character yet, it’s not too late to join. Just make your own animal hero and introduce them before you make your delve.
For you build, please choose an questing quarry and show your hero finding it. Maybe they have to overcome an obstacle, like a (non-lethal) trap, or perhaps it’s guarded by a really gross bug. Nothing too scary this week, though. This week, keep it cozy!
And keep in mind that this is primarily a minifig role-play adventure, so keep the builds modest. A few props and a dynamic pose from your character are what we’re looking for, not a speed build of a sprawling dungeon.
While your character’s actual quest is pretty easy, everyone wants to come off sounding heroic. So in your description for the challenge, puff up the adventure to make it sound really epic. Tall tales are important in the Valley.
Also, be sure to tell what you offer to the Questing Beast.
As before, please share on Flickr or Instagram and tag with #HeroesOfFurAndFeather
This week’s challenge is open until Tuesday, July 1. On July 2, we’ll announce the winner of this challenge and one participant prize.
A list of prizes and additional details can be found here.
Happy Delving Day, adventurers!
