German AFOLs Andreas Pettau (Feanor) and Larsvader have each created impressive medieval builds on their own, but past builds could hardly prepare you for the epic collaboration they debuted at Berlin SteineWAHN! event last month. Spread across 24 32×32 baseplates, “The Wolfhunt” pits two Classic Castle factions against each other in a detailed landscape enhanced by lights and motion. Andreas built the fantastic Wolfpack Tower and the surrounding swamps, while Larsvader constructed a castle, palisades, and forest for the noble Lion Knights. The collab won the popular vote for best-in-show as well as the judges’ vote for best collab.
A collaboration like this is best enjoyed in video, and thankfully, Feanor documents the build for those who couldn’t see it in person. Watch till the end to see the incredible dark mode.
Feanor’s Wolfpack section situates the tower atop a jaw-dropping wolf-shaped mountain peak.
Seen from behind, the rocky foundation holds a number of cutaways showing caves, dungeons, and even a dwarven steam train!
The diorama is packed with fun details and references to other LEGO themes. My favorite detail is a deceased Dragon Knight sitting atop a dragon skeleton.
The wolf-shaped mountain is beautifully sculpted from grey bricks and enhanced with climbing vines. The birds nest from coiled cables is a great touch. And of course no Classic Castle tribute is complete without a ghost!
The Wolfback stronghold is divided into two sections connected by a drawbridge. Both feature excellent half-timbering and a mix of stonework techniques.
Larsvader’s castle is more grounded in medieval architecture than fantasy and features an impressive inner keep of stone with outer palisades and a gatehouse built of wood. The mix of fall trees is breathtaking. As a fun cameo, since the Wolfpack have called on magic powers to aid their forces, the Lion Knights summoned a strange magician of their own, all the way from Bleeker Street.
