To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Moon landing, LEGO today unveiled the Creator Expert 10266 NASA Apollo 11 Lunar Lander. The set features a highly detailed replica of Apollo 11’s Eagle lunar module along with a brick-built lunar surface and crater, minifigure footprints and a U.S. flag.
The set was developed in partnership with NASA and contains 1,087 pieces with two astronaut minifigures, and launches this weekend starting June 1st for US $99.99 | CAN 139.99 | UK £84.99.
No event in human history has quite captured the simultaneous wonder of the world like the Moon landing did on in 1969. Astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first humans to set foot on the Moon, after being launched by a Saturn V rocket from Earth several days earlier.
As we approach the 50th anniversary of that momentous occasion, LEGO is launching the Creator Expert 10266 NASA Apollo 11 Lunar Lander, developed in cooperation with NASA. The set comes with the golden decent stage, a grey ascent stage, a brick-built lunar surface and two astronaut minifigures.
The descent stage of the Eagle Lunar Lander features metallic gold landing pads and panels, opening camera and laser hatches, and a ladder, while the ascent stage has a detailed interior with room for two astronauts. The two sections separate in a similar fashion to the original lander.
The brick-built lunar surface features a crater, minifigure footprints, a U.S. flag as well as a printed nameplate tile similar to those made for the LEGO Architecture product line.
Two minifigure astronauts are included in the set with metallic gold printed visors. The space suits appear to be identical and do not mention either Neil Armstrong or Buzz Aldrin, though the torsos do feature the NASA logo beneath the helmet/oxygen tank piece.
This isn’t the first time the Lunar Lander has been created in LEGO Form. The first was 565 Moon Landing from 1976, followed by 7468 Saturn V Moon Mission and 10029 Lunar Lander from 2003.
