Our favorite holiday tradition is opening all six LEGO Advent Calendars, one day at a time, with you, our readers! Along with spoiler pics of the daily gifts, we include commentary and alternate builds to celebrate the season and creativity.
We have an all-star cast of custom minifig creators leading our Advent adventure this year. Fool’s Figures is wizarding his way through Harry Potter and Frozen calendars. ExpansionBricks is launching Star Wars and Friends. And beyondb0nes is digging into Minecraft and City. Now let’s open some doors and see what gifts are in store for today!
Fools: Buckbeak the Hippogriff is instantly recognizable here! It’s just a shame that a minifigure can’t sit on his back.
Bones: I agree with Fools, it’s a very simple build, yet instantly recognizable. But where’s his little snacking ferret?
Expansion: Buckbeak is super recognisable. The blockiness almost makes him look like he’s turned to stone. Is Medusa nearby?!
Fools: Anna is here in yet another LEGO original design, but I find this one much more inspired than Elsa’s microfig.
Bones: What a beautiful print on this tiny mini-doll.
Fools: Anna also comes with a little batch of presents that can fit on Sven’s sleigh.
Fools: Don’t forget to write your letters to Santa Claus!
Jake: Hippogriff feathers make the best quill pens.
Bones; Judging by the size of that list, Harry has a lot of things to ask to Santa . Let’s see… the Sword of Gryffindor, the Philosopher’s Stone, an Invisibility Cloak, a Horcrux… what else?
Bones: Each year comes with a minifig-scale little vehicle. Will it be a snowmobile? A snow scooter? Well, this year the calendar honors the municipal workers with a winter service vehicle to clear the snow from the road.
Expansion: That snow clearing vehicle looks cool but something in me asks, “but where is the snow??”
Jake: It’s true, just a few white studs would have been nice.
Fools: This little snowplow has some nice pieces, and I could see some wealthier LEGO City residents purchasing these for themselves during the winter season.
Bones: This day features a Calico Cat catching a fish. It seems Minecraft cats are really smart creatures, since they use a fishing rod! It’s a nice addition to the calendar, as this cat has only appeared once so far, in set 21270. And even though the in-game model has colors on its cheeks, this mold is still quite faithful.
Fools: It’s nice that we always get some sort of animal companion in all of the advent calendars, and the Minecraft one includes a fish as well so you can tame the cat!
Jake: Instead of snow, you can use that plow to herd cats!
Bones: Puppy and his Cat-o-Mobile, fueled with fish (which means it needs to be refilled with fresh fish regularly).
Jake: I hear the cat-o-mobile requires charging 18 hours a day and never gets you where you want to go, but the seats are quite soft!
Expansion: This buzz droid just doesn’t do it for me. Previous versions had printed domes so knowing Lego can do better and chose not too is a shame. That stand is lowkey awkward too. 1/5
Bones: Did this drone just hatch from an egg, or is it just me?
Fools: Buzz Droids have such a complex and small design, it’s pretty much impossible to capture them well in minifigure scale. Even compared to LEGO’s past attempts, this one looks poor. I respect the attempt to include the droids saw-like apparatus that protrudes from the bottom, but the result is far too large.
Jake: It’s nigh-unrecognizable, but I always need more of those antenna pieces.
Expansion: Cute little fireplace. Simple, super festive with those wreaths and the parts are quite useful, especially that 1×3 jumper in DBG.
Fools: A pretty cute little fireplace, not much to say.
Jake: It’s a pretty sad slumber party with a fireplace this small. LEGO has made much better versions in calendars past.
Expansion: We’ve upgraded the hearth and use the buzz droid domes to make a decorative pot. C3PO also got treated to a new a new sniper rifle for Christmas.
Jake: Is that a decorative pot or a propane tank? Now we’re cooking with fire!
