The Mystery Shack

If you travel a lot, you get to see many amazing things. But sometimes you end up in a lousy place which sounded better on the internet than it really is in real life. The Mystery Shack is probably the worst form of a tourist trap — overcharged entry fees, irresponsible staff, sinister owner, supernatural occurrences, and occasional destruction of property. Makes you not want to visit Oregon ever again. Fortunately, The Mystery Shack is only an imaginary place in TV show Gravity Falls and this is a simple LEGO creation from talented builder soccersnyderi. So don’t be alarmed and take a look at the rest of the pictures.

George R.R. Martin sits upon the Iron Throne with these LEGO Game of Thrones characters

A Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin takes his rightful place in the Red Keep atop the infamous Iron Throne, from whence he will cast judgment and pronounce life or death upon the world’s inhabitants (mostly death). This magnificent entourage of LEGO characters by Callum brings many of your favorite characters to brick form, from Eddard Stark and Jon Snow, to Jaime and Tyrion, and Daenerys and Khal Drogo.

Powered by the stars themselves

Spanning two decades and achieving worldwide popularity, the Stargate franchise gave Star Trek a pretty good run for its money – and is now even up for a movie reboot. The final spin-off, named Stargate Universe, tried to lure fans by adopting the grittier realism of shows like Battlestar Galactica. Unfortunately that shift didn’t gel with audiences, and the show was cancelled after just 2 seasons.

I’m a huge SG-U fan and was sad to see it go. So when German builder nameless_member produced this beautiful model of the star ship Destiny, it was nice to be reminded I wasn’t the only one…

I really love the compactness of this build – it’s probably the smallest scale that you could build Destiny at and still do it justice. It has just the right level of greebling, and the ship’s distinctive curvature is perfectly captured, as you can see from this rear angle. Even the shuttle craft have been included!

Apple Macintosh 1984 Commercial Gets LEGO-ified.

Apple cascaded its way into the public psyche with its famous 1984 commercial, directed by Ridley Scott. Jason Allemann’s wonderfully poignant LEGO version re-imagines the work with Apple itself as the all-seeing overlord. Whatever side of the fence you sit regarding Apple’s business these days, this is a fantastic piece.

These LEGO Doctor Who Bookends Will Keep Your Books from Going All Wibbly-Wobbly

Adam Dodge traverses the intersection of awesome LEGO model and useful real-world object with this pair of Doctor Who-inspired bookends. I suspect many a Whovian will be drooling over Adam’s excellent creation.

Incredible Lego Pokemon Arcanine

I saw this creation by Mike Nieves (retinence) at BrickFair, and was blown away. The first thing that caught my eye was the paw smashing into the base, it really adds motion to the sculpture. Then I realized that the entire Pokemon (tiger?) was balanced on one paw! Incredibly, this creation was overlooked for nomination for Best Bionicle, but celebrity judge Ed Diment made sure this was recognized in the mecha category.

Mothra!

This incredible layout, by OliveSeon, shows Mothra, sometime ally/sometime enemy of Godzilla, involved in an epic battle. I love Mothra herself and her silken spray entangling all the buildings around her. The builder did a good job of seamlessly incorporating actual modular building sets in the layout as well. But I’m also partial to well-built battle scenes, and this fits the bill. For the record, I’m rooting for Mothra…

“Imagination is for turbo-nerds who can’t handle how kick-butt reality is!”

I feel mathematical when I look at this model of Finn and Jake from Adventure Time. The responsible party is ccy_8086, whose work has not been featured nearly enough on TBB.

With that in mind, enjoy another masterpiece by ccy_8086, the CMC015 power battle suit from Starcraft 2.

Hear Me Roar

Now, I’ll be the first to admit that I have not yet made it to the third installment of Mr. Martin’s epic tale. I cannot claim to have seen any of this season yet, either (which I assure you is very sad). I can, however, tell you that I’ve been flickr-stalking Dave Ware (Brickwares) since I caught a sneak-peak of this mosaic on facebook.

Clearly my flickr-stalking paid off. Because this is just stunning, and regardless of your opinion of the Lannister family (or any of their words), you can certainly take a moment to appreciate this mosaic.

Peter Dinklage did.

If you lean more towards the sci-fi end of the spectrum, Dave’s got something for you, too.

How the Face of Boe saved the Doctor, Martha, and New New York

Well, I won’t actually tell you — you’ll have to watch the show — but Thorsten Bonsch (Xenomurphy) has continued his series of scenes celebrating the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who with two scenes from the 2007 episode “Gridlock”.

First, Thorsten has recreated the incredible scene in which the Doctor and Martha encounter the world’s largest traffic jam:

50 years of Doctor Who – 02. Gridlock

But my favorite of Thorsten’s scenes so far is from the end of the same episode, in which the Doctor has an important encounter with the Face of Boe:

50 years of Doctor Who – 03. Gridlock

Bad Wolf

Just to prove that there are indeed much more interesting potential licenses LEGO could pursue (notwithstanding the existing Character Building sets), here’s a scene from Doctor Who built by Connor H.

Magic Box

Connor uses forced perspective in the background, and the photo’s lighting is consistent with some very blue artwork by Tim Doyle.

(It’s not the best LEGO TARDIS I’ve seen, but I’d rather have a nicely evocative Doctor Who scene at the top of the page than Homer’s stupid bald head.)

K.I.T.T. by Orion Pax

Alex Jones (Orion Pax) hits another 80’s homerun. Not only is this a clean, sytlish build, but the integration of the light brick into the hood actually made me giggle a little bit. I so want to zoom this vigorously on my desk right now. The Hoff would be so proud.
