Sandstorm is coming

When the talk turns to awesome mechs, Simmon Kim has plenty of them. His latest diorama of a desert outpost looks quite thrilling. The combination of tan, olive and dark bluish grey makes a perfect сoloration for a military mecha, while the curved road baseplate is a nice addition to the landscape. You’d better choose another route or get ready to give battle…

Speak softly, and carry a big Gatling gun

Korean builder Simmon Kim doesn’t say a whole lot about the LEGO models he builds — many of his photos don’t even have titles — but build quality always speaks louder than words anyway, and his mecha are awesome. Simmon’s latest mechanical wonder takes advantage of the new Mixels towball socket connections for a wonderfully compact stomper, replete with excellent application of stickers for little pops of color.

Art’s not dead

Many of my own builds are inspired by pieces of concept art, and one of my favorite artists has been Alexander Iglesias. I’m not alone in this regard; his art has inspired many a mecha builder over the years.

Most recently is Rancorbait, tackling one of my personal favorites, “Rotary cannons for some“.

"Gremlin" Multi-purpose platform

Simmon Kim has likewise been cranking out a whole fleet of awesome mecha lately, among them this take on The Fiddler.

fiddler mech

This flow of inspiration goes the other way, too; some artists have been inspired by the Lego community in their work.

Twins of destruction

This pair of mechs by Simmon Kim had me question if what I was seeing was indeed made out of Lego. The builder’s use of custom decals elevates these models to a new level of realism, giving them the quality of seemingly coming from a model kit.
