LEGO Star Wars 75152 Imperial Assault Hovertank from Rogue One [Spoiler Review]

LEGO released its first wave of LEGO Star Wars Rogue One sets in October, but we’ve decided to wait until both our readers and we ourselves have had a chance to see the movie, released in most countries on December 16. We’ll be reviewing all of the current Rogue One sets, starting today with 75152 Imperial Assault Hovertank, which includes 3 minifigs with 385 pieces and retails for $30.

Now that the movie is out, we’ll be talking about the movie’s characters and plot in our Rogue One LEGO set reviews, so come back and read our review later if you want to remain spoiler-free. But if you’re just interested in our recommendation now before you see the movie, this is a great value and I recommend the set heartily to any Star Wars fan.

Exclusive LEGO Star Wars Rogue One preview, thanks to a bed sheet and a broken lamp

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story releases later this week, but Ian MacDonald has built a special preview shot in LEGO with help from a bed sheet and some extreme forced perspective in his basement. Rogue One takes place just before 1977’s A New Hope, when the Death Star was being built. Ian’s scene depicts Jyn Erso walking out of the hanger on Yavin IV, where the Rebellion is based. His scene matches a shot seen 44 seconds into the second official trailer, and 2000 bricks went into just making the huge hanger, let alone our view into the distance.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

I just had to quote Ian’s description of putting this scene together, as I’m sure many builders will recognise their own experiences in these words: So many things had to go just right to make this image. There’s 3 layers of background, a bed sheet for a sky, and a couple lamps, one of which is broken. All shot in my basement.

As you can see, the end result is fantastic, but I really enjoy seeing ‘behind the scenes’ photographs that show the work and thought that goes into this kind of cinematic LEGO shot. The forced perspective of the layers of background gives the impression of differing size and scale with huge mountains at a distance, a tall pyramid-like structure and then the expansive hanger itself. A lot of effort for one shot but the finished shot is awesome.

LEGO Star Wars 75153 AT-ST Walker from Rogue One [Review]

Back in October, LEGO released its first batch of LEGO Star Wars sets from Rogue One without a whole lot of fanfare. We’ll be reviewing those sets around the movie’s release in just a couple of weeks, but one of the sets stands on its own without reference to its place in the forthcoming film — the new 75153 AT-ST Walker is the same vehicle seen throughout the Classic Trilogy, and it’s currently 20% off from Amazon (that’s $31.99).

In fact, many of the current Rogue One sets are already on sale! Chibi-style Rogue One battle scene

Rogue One continues to inspire new Star Wars LEGO creations. Check out this fantastic beach battle scene, lifted from the Rogue One trailer and “chibified” by Boba-1980. The microscale vehicles are really good — I particularly like the versions of the U-Wing and the TIE Strike Fighter.

Rebel Attack on Scarif

Aside from the good landscaping and figure posing, there’s a whole ton of action packed into a tight space in this diorama — justifying the builder’s choice to go with an unusual scale for the vehicles. Nice work.

Star Wars: Rogue One U-Wing in LEGO

So the first full-blown trailer for Rogue One has been out for all of a few hours, but that hasn’t stopped Vaionaut building a cool LEGO version of the new U-Wing ship which looks like it will be ferrying our intrepid heroes across the galaxy.

U-Wing

This sort of thing is why I’m getting pumped-up for Rogue One. I’m looking forward to seeing new ships and vehicles and characters and planets, all for the first time, yet all carrying that unmistakable whiff of Star Wars. However, we’re not featuring this model just because I’m excited — it’s a smart build in and of itself. It captures the lines and colors of this interesting new spaceship design, and features some nice details, particularly around the rear and the engines.

Imperial chamber scene from Star Wars Rogue One recreated in LEGO

With the movie’s release just a few months away and photos of Rogue One LEGO sets beginning to surface, it’s inevitable that we begin seeing the kind of shot-for-shot recreations of the trailer in LEGO that we saw before The Force Awakens. markus19840420 proves that there’s plenty of inspiration to be had from less than two minutes of footage with this faithful recreation of the mysterious hooded figure kneeling before what appears to be a bacta tank as Imperial Guards look on. The walls lean in claustrophobically, and Markus has even managed to include puffs of steam.

Here’s hoping Rogue One will inspire the kind of excellent LEGO Star Wars creations that The Force Awakens did, such as the hangar scene and Rey’s AT-AT home by the same builder.

Star Wars Rogue One trailer recreated scene for scene with LEGO [Video]

Stop-motion animators BrotherhoodWorkshop have spent the last several weeks since the reveal of the new Star Wars Rogue One trailer painstakingly recreating it scene-for-scene with LEGO, and the result is impressive. The quality of the effects and animation they achieved in just a few short weeks is stunning, and the trailer in brick form makes me just as excited for Rogue One as the official trailer. I can’t wait to see the first Death Star’s construction on screen (and presumably a Star Wars movie where the Death Star doesn’t blow up!).

Be sure to check out their VFX Breakdown and Behind the Scenes videos, too!
