Our favorite holiday tradition is opening all six LEGO Advent Calendars, one day at a time, with you, our readers! Along with spoiler pics of the daily gifts, we include commentary and alternate builds to celebrate the season and creativity.
We have an all-star cast of custom minifig creators leading our Advent adventure this year. Fool’s Figures is wizarding his way through Harry Potter and Frozen calendars. ExpansionBricks is launching Star Wars and Friends. And beyondb0nes is digging into Minecraft and City. Now let’s open some doors and see what gifts are in store for today!
Fools: Here we have Draco Malfoy in his Slytherin sweater, which is probably my favorite of the bunch. The Santa-hat Grindylow is super cute! Of course, as a Slytherin myself I might be a little biased.
Bones: How can you be so angry while wearing a sweater this cute?
Expansion: That Slytherin jumper is great. Trust Draco to wear a design featuring the creature that almost ended Harry in the 2nd challenge of the tri-wizard tournament
Fools: Today’s gift is a small spinner, with a different color on each side. While you can simply use it as is, it’s really meant to be used in conjunction with the calendar/box in this super short game.
Fools: The game is super simple: The top has colors that correspond to spaces on the “board”. You spin the top, and move your character forward to the closest spot of the corresponding color. Whoever gets to the end first wins.
Bones: Great idea to include a small game that goes beyond the build, it probably won’t replace real board games, but it’s a simple way to make use of that big cardboard box.
Jake: As a professional game designer, this game offends me. At least add some action spices on the board to mix things up!
Fools: For my rebuild, I present: the Candy Cane Shrine.
Jake: All hail the candy! That is cute.
Bones: Let’s pray we get lots of candy, but watch out for the dentist!
Bones: A puppy that comes with its small bowl filled with food and water, no new colors here. Compared to the Dog with Holiday Sweater we got last year, this year we’re back to something very classic.
Bones: Another golem, but this time brick-built. Is it the right size to go along with the microscale build from day 5? I’ll let the experts decide, but if so, it’s definitely a big golem!
Jake: He’s perfectly scaled for that puppy. What a good dog parent.
Bones: The Squarry brothers, legend has it that one of the two was a bit more serious during workout sessions.
Expansion: …
Fools: My Therapist: the Steve golem isn’t really. He can’t hurt you!
Expansion: The R5 astromech droid from Ahsoka’s star fighter is a cool inclusion. I sometimes wonder if the figs in advent calendars are influenced by which sets are not selling well 4/5
Jake: Not having seen Ashoka, I assumed it was a holiday-themed astromech with those colors. Serendipity!
Bones: Even video games don’t use color swaps as much as Star Wars does with R2-D2…
Expansion: A Christmas tree painting. A really well executed built with just 7 unprinted pieces and suitably festive 4/5
Bones: Just love to see that kind of thing in sets, it’s so simple, yet it’s immediately clear what this little painting represents. It could fit into any modular interior.
Jake: Love that happy little tree. This is adorable.
Expansion: Inspired by R2D2 in episode 6, R5 has volunteered as a server for this Christmas party.
Jake: Is the salamander a snack or a passenger? It’s good to see Sith-threepio has found a way to channel that aggression.
