LEGO 75344 Boba Fett’s Starship Microfighter [Review]

In 2022, LEGO released one Microfighter featuring a Mandalorian, and in 2023, so far we know there will be … one Microfighter featuring a Mandalorian! 75344 Boba Fett’s Starship Microfighter is, surprisingly, the first Microfighter treatment for our favorite space western villain’s ride – either under its old name or this newer eponymous one. There’s another first with this set: it’s the first time a Microfighter pilot has been behind a canopy or otherwise “inside”! The set comes with 85 pieces and 1 minifigure and will be available Jan 1st for US $9.99 | CAN $13.99 | UK £8.99. Let’s take a quick look at this bite-size build and see if Boba should keep the roof, or be out in the cold, err, January Tatooine rain?

The LEGO Group provided The Brothers Brick with an early copy of this set for review. Providing TBB with products for review guarantees neither coverage nor positive reviews.

The packaging and instructions

The front of the box shows Boba’s ship with Jabba’s palace in the background, and the back shows … Boba’s ship, with more of Tatooine in the background! Ok, that’s a bit unfair, since there aren’t other new Microfighters to promote and Star Wars looooves sand planets. Also, Boba Fett is seen walking with his EE-3 carbine rifle.

Inside are a small instruction booklet and three unnumbered bags. Sand green and dark red are always nice colors to get, but the highlight is probably the 2×2 macaroni tile appearing in dark green (ahem, earth green) for the first time.

The Build

With 85 pieces, there isn’t much to say about the build. The cockpit is a bit too big, but had to be sized to fit a minifigure, and the overall shape is about right. The stabilizer fins feel a little dinky, but the twin blaster cannons at the bottom of the main hull are immediately recognizable and the build hits enough notes that it’s very clear what ship this is. The back includes a few details for the engines and a sensor array, but you won’t want to display it facing that direction. The way the ship balances to stand upright, mimicking its traditional flight position, is a very nice touch.

The Minifigure

This Boba Fett minifigure was previously only available in two larger sets, 75312 Boba Fett’s Starship, and 75326 Boba Fett’s Throne Room. The full-size version of the ship doesn’t really break the bank, but a $10 Microfighter really lowers the bar. And this is a very nice minifigure. Fett’s black robes are detailed, and he has a head that’s single-sided but includes some wrinkle or scar (Sarlacc pit damage, probably) on the back. The standout feature, though is fantastically detailed arm printing, with his MM9 wrist rocket and a Mythosaur skull. Microfighter minifigures run the spectrum from generic (army builders!) to detailed individuals (cheap high-end characters!) and this is a great example of the latter category.

Recommendation

When LEGO first started releasing the Star Wars Microfighters, almost every one of them looked like they could be pulled in to the Fairground Carousel, or placed outside a building as a coin-operated ride. The chibi style, with pilots sitting on top of their ships in a way that exaggerated the scale difference, was a distinct and adorable look. The cockpit canopy in this set keeps the lines smoother and de-emphasizes the scale difference of the pilot, and it makes this more of just a midi-scale starship that still has a minifigure pilot for some reason.

That said … if you collect Microfighters, you’ll want this. If you’re a Star Wars minifig collector and don’t have this Boba Fett yet, you’d pay close to the cost of the set to get just the figure on the secondary market, so it’s an easy buy. It’s not a perfect set, and it loses some of the charm of the Microfighter line, but you get a recognizable, swooshable ship with an excellent minifigure for $10. It’s a hard bounty to regret.

    “or this newer eponymous one”

This would mean something else has been named after Boba Fett’s starship. Is it the set? Do you mean the set?
