LEGO DOTS 41958: Extra DOTS Series 7 – SPORT [Review]

It feels like it was just yesterday (Okay, it was back in January) when we took a look at the Extra DOTS series 6 packs. But now the latest iteration of collectible tile semi-blind packs has arrived with 41958 Extra DOTS Series 7 – SPORT. They’re available now from the LEGO Shop Online for US $3.99 | CAN $4.99 | UK £3.49, and we bought a few so you could see what’s up. Because we love you.

The bag and contents

Extra DOTS Series 7 packs have a listed part count of 115, down 3 from Series 6. As usual, this includes 10 “surprise decos” – a random mix of printed tiles from a group of 16 new designs for this series. The printed tiles are 1×1 squares this time, with a good number of designs showcased on the front of the packaging.

The parts

Unlike several previous DOTS extra packs, there aren’t any new molds introduced here. You do get a good range of colors and shapes, though, with one new transparent color and one rare shade.  As is standard practice with LEGO on small, easy-to-lose pieces, they’ve “overfilled” each element with an extra copy. This pushes the actual part count of a bag to 123 pieces (up from the listed 115).

  • 16 Dark blue quarter circle tile
  • 16 Teal quarter circle tile
  • 16 Pearlized Dark Blue 1×1 round tile (NEW COLOR)
  • 16 Vibrant Yellow 1×1 round tile (2nd appearance – 1st was in 41950 Lots of DOTS -Lettering)
  • 16 Coral quarter-circle tile
  • 16 Light blue-grey quarter-circle tile
  • 11 Printed 1×1 square tile
  • 16 Aqua 1×1 round tile

Printed Tiles

The theme of Series 7 is “SPORT”, and that’s reflected in the designs on the printed tiles. Due to LEGO’s online ordering limits, I was only able to get three packs, but that was enough to acquire 11 out of the 16 designs. With close examination of the packaging (and fliers in other DOTS products from this wave), I was able to locate the other 5 designs – they’re shown here with a blue border.

The full line of Extra DOTS printed tiles continues to expand. As much as I love these, I do have to wonder how LEGO balances the quantity here against their stated policy of using stickers to help with inventory concerns.

Conclusion and recommendation

Extra DOTS series 7 is…okay. I love the new opalized transparent dark blue tiles, and some of the designs on the printed tiles are very cute. But beyond that, there isn’t a lot of innovation in this expansion to the series. I think a second new color for a tile would have elevated things, or maybe going with a 10-count of each part and adding in another couple of tile options. Unless you need these parts for a project or want to build a complete set of printed tiles, I’d probably pass on these. Or just use them as a low-cost option to push your LEGO order up over a threshold for a gift with purchase or something. (But, really, pick up a pack of Series 6 instead.)
