LEGO 40488 Coffee Cart Gift with Purchase – A better deal than the coffee [Review]

If you live in a city, you likely also have at least one coffee cart somewhere, and now with the release of LEGO 40488 Coffee Cart, you can include a cute coffee stand in your LEGO city. The cute little 2-wheeled cart includes a bicycle, 2 Minifigs, and a little table with an umbrella. 40488 Coffee Cart comes with 149 pieces and is free with a qualifying purchase of US $65 | CAN $65 | UK £65 from LEGO, available now through Nov. 14.

Unboxing the parts, instructions and stickers

On the front of the box, the spunky little coffee cart, and table are featured against a fun background that looks a bit like it’s made of folded paper. The set’s two minifigs are included, along with a red bicycle.

The set includes three unnumbered bags, an instruction booklet, and a small sticker sheet with two stickers for menu signs.

With only 149 pieces, there’s nothing too special in the parts. That said, there are still a few parts of note included: a bunch of curved slopes in dark azure, and six black tall 1×1 bricks with two studs on one side.

The build

The build starts out with a short base with counters at the front and back. There are two appliances on the back counter, a bean grinder, and a 2-spout espresso machine. The front counter includes two red coffee cups and two water bottles, or possibly iced coffee cups.

Next, we add a striped roof with a large opening that will hold the sign later. I hope the cart is not in Seattle, as there is little chance of the barista staying dry with that huge hole. We also attach two wheels at one end, and little legs to hold up the other end. There is also a trailer hitch for moving the cart.

The striped look continues along the back of the cart, with the addition of a little opening to let in the light.

The next step is a cute, but unusually large sign in the shape of a steaming cup of coffee. Finally, we add the stickers, which affix to a black tile at each end of the cart to show the drink options. I don’t know about you, but $11 (I’m going say it’s dollars) for a coffee seems pretty steep, and I get my coffee from Starbucks a fair amount. Then again, at least it’s not $37 like the coffee Emmett picks up in The LEGO Movie.

The finished model and recommendations

The completed set is colorful and a great little scene, and while the building techniques are nothing new, the details are fun. Also, it’s a pretty decent parts pack, especially for a freebie set. It will only be available for a few weeks, so I would recommend picking it up if you are looking to add a little flavor to your collection.
