LEGO BrickHeadz 40492: La Catrina [Review]

Halloween may be over, but the candy-filled spooky holiday is not the only festivities around this time of year. There is also the Day of the Dead, which usually follows Halloween, and lasts a bit longer over two days. This holiday is also joining many other traditions from throughout the year to be commemorated in BrickHeadz style. LEGO BrickHeadz 40492: La Catrina, perfectly captures the event in an adorable skeleton woman in a very colorful dress and flower-covered hat. LEGO BrickHeadz 40492 comes with 141 pieces, and is available now for US $9.99 | CAN $12.99 | UK £9.99

Unboxing the set and instructions

The front of the box features the competed model of La Caterina (149), on a festive-colored background. On the side of the box is a colorful illustration of her head, along with a couple of flag-filled banners, while the back of the box shows La Caterina from another angle along with the display stand.

The set comes with 3 unnumbered bags, a single baseplate, and an instruction book.

The build

Right away, the build starts with an unconventional base, to accommodate the many curved slopes used to form the dress, using a bunch of 2×2 plates with two studs to form attachment points on all sides.

As we finish the torso, we get the first of the printed elements adorned with bones for the ribs, visible over a v-neck collar. The arms are topped with large curved sleeves.

As we move on to start the face, we get the second printed element, a 2×2 tile printed with the skull nose, and mouth, along with traditional face paint designs. We also get the usual pink brain at the center of the head.

The face includes one more printed tile with decorative eyebrows and black bangs. With the face completed, we move to the voluminous black hair on the other 3 sides of the BrickHeadz figure.

The model is completed with a wide-brimmed hat adorned with several flowers.

The finished model

The finished model is quite lovely, with the bright bold colors of the dress and hat providing a stark contrast to the black and white skeleton.

Conclusion and recommendations

It’s great to see LEGO continuing to branch out with their holiday BrickHeadz theme, seeking more and more holidays from around the world to commemorate in the BrickHeadz style, and I look forward to seeing more diversity. If you are a fan of the previous sets in this collection, or you celebrate Day of the Dead, this set would make a perfect addition to your collection. Also, if you are looking for a good parts pack, featuring many bricks and plates with sideways-facing studs, and in less common colors like white and red, this set is a great choice for the price.
