LEGO officially unveils 75304 Darth Vader, 75305 Scout Trooper, and 75306 Imperial Probe Droid [News]

Following the early view of the spring 2021 LEGO Star Wars sets published on Walmart.com this week, LEGO has now officially unveiled these three new sets targeted at adult builders and collectors. In addition to continuing the Star Wars Helmets series with new 75304 Darth Vader Helmet and 75305 Scout Trooper Helmet sets, LEGO will also be releasing a completely new, large-scale 75306 Imperial Probe Droid sculpture.

Last week, we spoke with the LEGO Star Wars design team about all three of these sets, as well as some upcoming sets that have not yet been fully revealed. Read on for some extra info we heard straight from the design team!

All three sets will be available for pre-order beginning March 25th, and will go on sale April 26th.

75304 Darth Vader Helmet | 834 pieces | US $69.99 | CAN $99.99 | UK £59.99

Capture the sinister look of the Star Wars icon and ultimate villain, with the 834-piece displayable model. Offering an immersive building experience, the finished helmet makes an impressive display piece.

When asked why the Darth Vader bust was so much more parts-intensive (and therefore more expensive) than the other Star Wars Helmets sets, the design team shared that the other helmets rely on a combination of a studs-out skin and studs-up surfaces, while Darth Vader’s flared helmet requires different solutions.

75305 Scout Trooper Helmet | 471 pieces | US $49.99 | CAN $69.99 | UK £44.99

The stunning 471-piece helmet has been created as an homage to the Scout Troopers’ ultimate reconnaissance and infiltration abilities. Dust off your speeder bike and enjoy recreating every contour and detail with LEGO bricks.

We asked the design team what kind of reference materials they use while designing sets like this, such as specifications or movie props. Head of LEGO Star Wars design Jens Kronveld Frederiksen (read our exclusive interview with Jens Kronveld Frederiksen here on TBB) confirmed that Lucasfilm does indeed send all-around photos of real movie props if they’re available, but also that the team simply watches scenes from the actual movies over and over. This is because lighting matters a great deal in a movie, and a prop or costume may appear differently on screen versus in a photo.

75306 Imperial Probe Droid: 683 pieces for US $69.99 | CAN $79.99 | UK £59.99

Adult builders can recreate scenes from Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back on the ice planet Hoth™ when constructing this distinctive droid. The 683-piece model features a transparent pole to ‘suspend’ the droid over the buildable snowy scene.

Asked why the LEGO version of the “Viper” droid was dark gray rather than black, the design team referenced our earlier question about color perception, emphasizing that the color on screen in most scenes is closer to dark gray than the black of the “real” movie prop.

In addition to these three sets, the LEGO Star Wars design team shared a preview of a set we can’t talk about yet, as well as teasing the previously announced UCS Republic Gunship. The team shared a mockup of the dual-canopy cockpit section, which appears to be about 20 studs long, confirming the absolutely massive size of this forthcoming set — “You’ll need a coffee table, not a shelf.”

When asked what kinds of minifigures might be in the set, the team couldn’t provide much detail, although they did say that it probably wouldn’t make sense for a UCS set “much larger” than minifig-scale to include “an army of clone troopers.” We tried asking the question a bit differently, in terms of “how many legs” might be involved (hoping to tease out whether additional vehicles might be included), but no luck. It was a hilarious master class in deflection, despite the LEGO Star Wars design team’s protestations that “We don’t do silly.”

We’ll share more about both the secret set and the UCS Republic Gunship as information is revealed.

The new sets will feature two iconic additions to the LEGO Star Wars helmet collection first revealed last year – a bust inspired by Darth Vader™ and one in the likeness of a loyal Scout Trooper™. Moreover, a stunning new model honouring the imposing Imperial Probe Droid™ completes the trio.

Designed for adults and experienced LEGO builders with a passion for the Star Wars galaxy, fans can now build, display and pay homage to the Dark Lord of the Sith™ by taking on these new building challenges.

LEGO® Star Wars™ Darth Vader™ Helmet (75304) – capture the sinister look of the Star Wars icon and ultimate villain, with the 834-piece displayable model. Offering an immersive building experience, the finished helmet makes an impressive display piece.

LEGO® Star Wars™ Scout Trooper™ Helmet (75305) – the stunning 471-piece helmet has been created as an homage to the Scout Troopers’ ultimate reconnaissance and infiltration abilities. Dust off your speeder bike and enjoy recreating every contour and detail with LEGO bricks.

LEGO® Star Wars™ Imperial Probe Droid™ (75306) – adult builders can recreate scenes from Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back on the ice planet Hoth™ when constructing this distinctive droid. The 638-piece model features a transparent pole to ‘suspend’ the droid over the buildable snowy scene.

“Some of our favourite Star Wars characters have the most profound, intimidating on-screen presences, despite the fact that you can’t see their facial expressions,” says Jens Kronvold Frederiksen, Creative Director, LEGO Star Wars. “In recreating the sinister helmets of Darth Vader and the Scout Trooper, it was important to capture the details and essential features that people around the world will recognise, even those who aren’t too familiar with the Star Wars galaxy. I think all three display sets are extremely cool and I hope fans will enjoy the building process and be thrilled to display them once complete.”

Passionate builders can enjoy some time to relax as they take on these complex creative challenges, recreating every authentic detail in true LEGO style. When done with the build, the models can be displayed with a bespoke plaque to put the final touch that will make the perfect desk ornament or centrepiece in the home for Star Wars fans.

The sets will be priced between $49.99 – $69.99 USD/ €49.99 – €69.99 EUR/ £44.99 – £59.99 GBP and will be available for pre-order from March 25th, 2021 from LEGO.com and other retailers, and on general sale globally from April 26th.
