LEGO Gift With Purchase – 40449 Easter Bunny’s Carrot House [Review]

For the past several years around this time, LEGO has offered an Easter-themed Gift with Purchase. This year proves no different. Well, maybe a little different. It is a new set, after all. This year’s perk is 40449 Easter Bunny’s Carrot House, a 231-piece set featuring a cute little bunny and a single-room carrot-based home. It will be available with purchases over $60 from March 15th until April 5th, or while a supplies last. Is it worth potentially filling your cart with a few extra items to hit the required total? Let’s take a look and see!

The LEGO Group provided The Brothers Brick with an early copy of this set for review. Providing TBB with products for review guarantees neither coverage nor positive reviews.

Set Contents

Last year, LEGO offered a kind of meh brick built Easter Egg as a seasonal Gift With Purchase.  This year they went with a more adorable scene of the Easter Bunny’s home. On the thumb-sealed box are some nicely subdued graphics, with the set displayed in front of a soft-focus background. The top right corner of the front of the box has a red ribbon with an Easter egg icon and “limited edition” wording. The rear of the box shows the opening on the back of the house, as well as calling out the “Easter egg Easter egg” of an egg in the attic. Don’t worry, we’ll talk more about that odd choice later.

Inside the box are four unnumbered part bags, a sticker sheet, and a 76-page instruction booklet.

The sticker sheet is full of some really fun graphics. I just adore the hatching chick on the rug, the egg-shaped mirror, and the rabbit face that will adorn the front door. My favorite detail, though, is the portraits on the wall. Take a look at that family photo – all those kids make me think they breed like…well…rabbits.

The Easter Bunny

The star of this set is, of course, the Easter bunny. It’s a great little build, with a white cupcake tail and a pink quarter circle tile for a nose. The mix of dark and light grey elements keeps the fur from looking boring. The style is reminiscent of the chick from last year’s set, arguably the best thing about that one.

Carrot House

The build rests on four 6×6 rounded corner plates in lime green. Those are braced with a layer of brown plate representing loose soil around the carrot house. Inside, resting on an exposed patch of grass, a 2×6 white tile serves as a rug. That tile is relatively scarce, being new for 2021 and only appearing in two other sets so far. Sadly, it quickly gets covered with a sticker. (At least the sticker is adorable.) The build continues with a small chest of drawers with a stickered mirror over it.

The build continues with more work on the interiors walls. The front door is a bright yellow piece that has only appeared once before, in 75978 Diagon Alley. So, of course, it gets a (cute) sticker applied to it, too. It’s also at this point that a lone tan egg is placed on the roof over the room.

That mysterious egg is quickly covered up by curved bricks as the roof is formed. More stickers are applied to the orange exterior to give things a carrot-like texture. Window sills are also added, with stickered-shutters and a selection of flowers built from modified 1×1 round plate. The exterior base also gets spruced up with a green vine and brown cheese slope tile. You can see here that the back of the carrot house is open to the elements. Not great security, but necessary for for play.

The other side of the house gets a couple of very odd plants. What look like purple Easter eggs are growing up from…oh. I just got it. Eggplants. Right.  There’s also an adorable mailbox with a bunny-post logo.

The final steps of the house add some greens to the top of the carrot. But let’s pause here and return to the Easter egg Easter egg of the egg in the attic. The orange panel attached above the rear attic opening can be removed to reveal that tan egg from earlier. I admit to being really confused about this one. Wouldn’t that egg just start to smell? Is this maybe a bit of revenge from a disgruntled Easter-Ex? The world may never know.

The completed model looks the best from the front. The only real question is “how does that rabbit open the front door”? Hold on. Is that the Easter Bunny? Maybe that’s just a normal bunny and the real Easter Bunny is going to come home and wonder who ripped the back off of his carrot home.

It’s possible I’m over thinking this.

Conclusion and recommendation

LEGO gifts with purchases are sometimes hit or miss, I think this is one of the better ones. It’s a super cute build with some interesting techniques, fun parts, and even decent designs on the stickers.  On the downside, marking this set “limited edition” feels like a bit of collector baiting to me. That’s the way most of these seasonal gifts have been branded, though, so I guess it’s not much of a nit. Regardless, if you find yourself budgeting $60 US for LEGO sets, I doubt you’ll be upset to see this added to your cart. It’s sure to brighten up many an Easter basket this year.

Hey guys, if I remember correctly this article contained a section about the deteriorating quality of LEGO pieces.
    There did it go?
